COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local fire officials advise residents to safely dispose of dried Christmas trees and old electronics to help prevent fires; La Crosse crews will pick up live trees from Jan. 5 to Jan. 16 (trees must be placed on the boulevard by 7 a.m.).  News8000
  • The Garden of Eden Preservation Society held its first fundraiser of 2026 at the Arnold House in Gaelsville to raise funds for a student volunteer award program. The nonprofit will provide two $500 grants to students who complete 10 hours of service at East Side House & boost local history involvement.  News8000
  • Eleven women summited Mount Kilimanjaro on an eight-day climb that began at midnight, raising funds for an African school building digital libraries. They trained at Devils Lake & Colorado to build endurance and now plan another summit to inspire community strength.  News8000

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from multiple departments responded on Thursday morning to a semi-trailer fire containing electronic recycling materials behind Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, using extra water & coping with freezing temperatures as crews contained the blaze with no injuries reported.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Onalaska Fire Department shared fire safety tips after the holiday celebrations (including guidance for staying safe in cold weather) to help residents prevent post-holiday fires in the area.  News8000

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local skiers raced in Mt. La Crosse’s New Year’s Day Race yesterday as part of the Hometown Racing series, featuring three divisions and about 50 participants (including family competitors) who sharpened their skills and enjoyed friendly competition.  News8000
  • The New Year’s Day Race took place Jan. 1 in La Crosse as local runners participated + officials plan to share race results soon.  News8000
