  • The J and A committee in La Crosse will review plans today for community food fridges to boost food assistance — the meeting may set the stage for a new local support program.  News8000
  • Pathway Homes released its second year update on Jan. 5, detailing how its programs have provided housing and support to those facing homelessness in the area. The nonprofit is working with local partners to expand its services.  News8000

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire at a south side apartment building displaced residents around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday while firefighters worked over three hours, provided a bus for warm shelter, and reported no injuries+ the cause of the fire remains under investigation.  WIZM

  • Kickapoo Valley Reserve Winter Festival will return Jan. 10 at the reserve, offering winter activities, contests and talks for all ages.  La Crosse Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators in the district start a year-long training on the Neurosequential Model in Education today after receiving $55,000 and $10,000 grants from the WEA Member Benefits Foundation and Mayo Clinic Health System to help 20 staff across schools support student well-being.  WEAU

  • Jim Drees, a La Crosse County leader on the Pathways Home team, provided a 2026 progress update on efforts to reach functional-zero homelessness by 2029, outlining current milestones and future steps in the community.  La Crosse Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emplify Health by Gundersen (1,929 births in 2025) and by Bellin (1,698 births) delivered newborns with over 1,700 different names recorded last year. Top choices were baby girl names Lainey, Nora, and Evelyn and baby boy names Hudson, Henry, and Cooper.  WIZM

  • Mark Murphy, owner of Murphy’s Frame and Axle, is one of ten finalists for the Packers FAN Hall of Fame. Fans may vote once daily until Jan. 31 & the winner will be named in late February.  WIZM
