  • Local fishermen rescued a dog that fell through the ice on the Black River yesterday and reported that the animal is safe after a swift response.  News8000

  • Pump House Regional Art Center and Viroqua Shakespeare are hosting the 4th annual Bard-A-Thon, a weeklong 24/7 community reading of Shakespeare’s works (held at Pump House in Viroqua) that runs from Sunday, Jan. 18 through Sunday, Jan. 25.  WIZM
  • Viterbo University will host the Midwest's largest MLK Day celebration on Monday with campus events + a keynote by Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, according to Dr. Carolyn Colleen. On Tuesday, 1,000 seventh graders will explore civil rights history and be inspired by icon Lynda Blackmon Lowery.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WTC hosted its Junior Achievement Career Fair on Jan. 16 to offer local students the chance to explore career options and network with professionals. The event provided practical insights into career planning at the WTC campus.  News8000
  • Earlier this week, the Onalaska Board of Education approved an all day + every day 4K preschool program for the 2026-27 school year after months of research, said Superintendent Ben Barton on La Crosse Talk. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Jill Billings and State Sen. Brad Pfaff introduced a bill to cap insulin prices at $35 per one-month supply — a measure aimed at preventing residents from skipping lifesaving doses. The proposal applies to all health plans and government self-insured plans.  WEAU
  • The Assembly passed the No Tax on Tips bill on Thursday with bipartisan support, letting tip workers deduct up to $25,000 to lower taxes plus potentially save about $1,300 when filing. The bill now awaits Senate approval, a governor's signature and adjustments to tax software.  News8000
