COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two community leaders were honored at the 39th Iverson Freking Awards in La Crosse today for their work in promoting unity. Sister Laura Nettles was acknowledged for bridging cultural divides at Viterbo University and Marta Martinez for supporting Hispanic families through the Coulee Region Immigration Task Force.  News8000
  • Tuesday morning, the fence around Cameron Park in downtown La Crosse came down, reopening the park for public use after cleaning and safety measures addressed past drug use and violence concerns (it was closed last September along with Burns Park).  WIZM
  • The Lions are hosting a dinner and raffle on Groundhog Day (Feb. 2) to support local community projects in the Seven Rivers Region. Attendees can look forward to enjoying the best Groundhog Dinner as part of the event.  La Crosse Tribune

  • Galesville Hometown Pharmacy will close soon — leaving residents to travel further for prescriptions.  La Crosse Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • United Airlines is set to begin daily service from La Crosse Regional Airport on May 7 with four nonstop flights to Chicago operated by United Express; booking opens today.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • National School Choice Week is engaging local education groups to showcase nontraditional learning options today, with HOPE connecting homeschoolers and families from nearby communities (Black River Falls, Warrens, Viroqua, and La Crescent). Fifty-nine schools will host events in the La Crosse and Eau Claire area this week.  WEAU
  • Over 580 students performed at the La Crosse Center on Jan. 27 in the annual Band Extravaganza — delivering renditions of 'Do-Re-Mi' and the Imperial March — after rehearsing separately. Their performance was led by Dr. Martin Gaines.  WIZM
  • Onalaska High School received Board approval on Jan. 26 to use $10 million leftover from the 2022 referendum for classroom, elevator, cooler and restroom upgrades plus a new trainer room and weight room expansion — the design phase runs through April with summer renovations and fall construction slated for December completion.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire Station 3 is undergoing its first major renovation in nearly 60 years after city council approved a $719,000 contract on Oct. 9. Crews will complete the work by May to improve firefighter recruitment and community safety.  News8000
  • Local officials presented proposals for new bike lanes on Jan. 28 to update transportation routes in La Crosse (more details will be shared at upcoming meetings).  News8000
