BUSINESS NEWS

  • Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern (which served the community for nearly 20 years along the Mississippi River near Riverside Park on Front Street) will close on March 14 as announced on Facebook. The Weber Group said it will serve the community in other ways through its related ventures.  WIZM

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday morning, Niki Pohnl visited the WIZM studio to talk about her year-long adventure touring over 120 wineries across Wisconsin. She shared her paper map and scrapbook marking each winery visit — a creative exploration of local wine culture.  WIZM
  • The city is seeking public feedback to choose a final design for an art piece that will decorate the pavilion at the upcoming Imagination Center in Reindahl Park. Residents can answer eight questions — online — to help shape the project.  La Crosse Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • La Crosse School Board president Deb Suchla outlined plans for naming a new elementary school for Emerson and Spence students as demolition of the 125-year-old Hogan building continues. Community surveys will start in February to gather name, mascot & color ideas for the school.  WIZM
  • Sparta Area School District will ask voters in April to approve a referendum that raises its operating budget to $1.8 million per year for three years to stabilize classroom size and retain staff; a community session is set for Feb. 25 at Sparta High School.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DOT unveiled a hybrid plan to reconstruct downtown La Crosse's 3rd and 4th streets with new bike lanes, a roundabout, and preserved parking. City Council will review the proposal Tuesday at 6 p.m. (Judiciary and Administrative Committee) as work is slated to begin in 2030.  WIZM
  • Governor Evers and local officials toured the La Crosse Hunger Task Force warehouse on Thursday to support food banks and urge lawmakers to keep federal funding secure for community food supplies. The visit addressed concerns that spending cuts could impact assistance for families.  WIZM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emplify Health by Gundersen has launched a new mental health program in La Crosse to help local teens facing mental health challenges. The initiative offers a supportive space for adolescents in need of care.  La Crosse Tribune

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Alice in DairyLand reported that Wisconsin potatoes offer low calories, high fiber plus vitamin B6 for healthy meals. Sarah Hagenow, the event's 78th host, noted that six local potato varieties can help support a healthy eating lifestyle.  News8000

SPORTS NEWS

  • The second-ranked boys wrestling teams in Divisions 1 and 3 clashed on Thursday when Aquinas visited Holmen for the conference title, and Holmen won 37+28 to claim the MVC title. Sophomore Brendan Henderson secured the only pin for the Vikings at 113 pounds in 20 seconds.  WIZM
