COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local community leaders installed a new community fridge today at a neighborhood center to offer free food to residents — the project aims to reduce waste and support those in need.  News8000
  • Thirty-four women veterans participated in an I Am Not Invisible photo shoot at Western Technical College today to share their military service stories and honor their accomplishments (the number increased from 22 last year). Their images and interviews will be added to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum digital collection.  WEAU

  • A pickup truck broke through ice (near Schafer's Landing) on Monday, Feb. 16 and the driver escaped uninjured.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mindoro Presbyterian Church and North Bend Presbyterian Church see dwindling attendance and volunteer-led services amid a rural membership decline; the churches hold Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to serve local residents.  News8000
  • Driftless Area Art Festival is accepting artist applications for its 22nd annual event (Sept. 19-20) in Soldiers Grove. Local creatives in the Driftless region are encouraged to apply and showcase their work.  La Crosse Tribune

  • Mississippi Valley Conservancy will host a presentation on winter birds in the Coulee Region led by naturalist Dan Jackson + the talk will explain how feeder birds use local habitats during the winter.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Students from North and Spence elementary schools celebrated Chinese New Year with a hands-on cultural program led by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students, which marked the third session of the after-school Chinese club.  News8000

  • Gubernatorial candidate Kelda Roys visited the Coulee Region on Monday, Feb. 16, stopping at Sprouts Child Care, the Hunger Task Force and Westby Creamery to discuss her plan to raise wages and lower costs; she also promoted her state health insurance proposal, KeldaCare.  News8000
  • Gubernatorial candidate David Crowley visited La Crosse Monday and used his experience as Milwaukee County Executive to stress the need for stronger state and local partnerships to support schools, public safety, and community programs — he called for collaboration to fix budget shortfalls.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local physician from Emplify Health warns that menopause can raise heart disease risk, citing a 3% increase for early menopause and a 7% risk rise for premature menopause (with the average onset at age 51). She urges regular check-ups during Heart Month to manage these risks.  News8000
