COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Onalaska Hilltopper Rotary Club distributed nearly 300 water filters outside Puerto Vallarta on Feb. 21 (Saturday) to help locals amid delayed travel caused by violence. Members now face canceled flights and await the airport reopening as they plan to return home this coming Sunday.  WIZM
  • The Epsilon Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity is set to install the Bi-Centennial Patrick J. Stephens Memorial Garden at its fraternity home on Main Street on July 4, 2026 (honoring a foundational community leader).  News8000
  • Coulee region residents began returning from Puerto Vallarta on Feb. 24 (according to travel records) and are now easing back into local routines.  News8000
  • La Crosse Rotary After Hours hosted its annual Shark Tank pitch meeting Tuesday where club members presented community projects to win up to $10K in funding; half the funds come from club money and half from a district grant, with winners set to be chosen next week.  News8000
  • Student performers from Logan and Central will launch the 15th anniversary Moon Tunes season at Riverside Park with weekly Thursday shows from June 4 to August 27. The series runs 5:30-8 p.m. plus headliners take the bandshell stage at 7 p.m., featuring fan favorites like TUGG, The Remainders, and The Executives.  WIZM

  • A Black History Month Community Celebration is taking place today at Viterbo University where guests can enjoy food from Mia’s Kitchen, music by the Mayfield Experience, and team trivia at 5:30 p.m. The event asks attendees to bring a non-perishable donation for the Hmong Cultural and Community Center Rice Drive.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wisconsin Department of Children and Families Secretary Jeff Pertl visited La Crosse Tuesday to promote a free pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds at the Kwik Trip Kids Learning Center. He met with facility leaders to discuss Get Kids Ready, a state initiative designed to eliminate tuition fees for families.  News8000
  • Bestselling author Angela Dominguez begins a three day tour today at all nine elementary schools to show over 2,000 students how to turn life experiences into stories. The event is supported by a partnership with the public library and the Gold Star Grant (Public Education Foundation).  WIZM
  • Hintgen Elementary held the 'Read Your Heart Out' session on Monday after a snowstorm postponed Friday's event. Older students read books and talked with African-American guest readers as the program celebrated Black culture and encouraged reading.  WIZM
  • Longfellow Middle School seventh graders are learning modern indoor farming with a new EdRack hydroponic system that teaches them to grow food indoors; they plant seeds, monitor nutrients & test light conditions to see how each affects plant growth.  News8000

  • UW-River Falls coach Matt Walker resigned on Monday to coach Division I Drake after winning a national title, and longtime assistant Jake Wissing is now interim coach (ending a 15-year tenure). This follows UW-La Crosse's coach leaving for Division II, marking a regional trend of top coaches moving up.  WIZM
