COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students from seven Coulee Region high schools joined a preview at the WIZM studio—possibly a record crowd—and will pack 80,000 meals at Logan High School on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The meals will be sent to a country in South America or Africa.  WIZM

  • Altra Federal Credit Union — one of 180 credit unions nationwide to earn the Diamond Award — was honored for marketing excellence by the Marketing, Public Relations and Development Council on April 3. Chief Marketing Officer Cheryl Dutton said the award reflected the hard work of the entire marketing team, which has earned similar recognition since 2017.  WIProud

  • A missing, pregnant Beaver Dam teen was found safe—16-year-old Sophia Franklin was located—and suspect 40-year-old Gary Day is in custody and faces charges for child enticement and abduction.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shaundel Washington-Spivey was elected mayor after a tight race in which she received over 9,000 votes against Chris Kahlow’s 8,500 votes—she will replace outgoing mayor Mitch Reynolds. Washington-Spivey said she is ready to start working and thanked Kahlow for a hard-fought campaign.  WIProud
  • The City of La Crosse announced that starting April 3rd, Pettibone Park Drive North (within Pettibone Park) was closed for utility work until further notice; the west entrance remains open for parking and beach access. Residents may contact Jim Flottmeyer with questions.  WIProud
  • After this week’s election in La Crosse, Gary Padesky unseated incumbent Mac Kiel in district seven while Aron Newberry defeated Chris Woodard to win district nine. Crystal Bedford, Lisa Weston and Rosanne Northwood won seats in districts 11, 12 and 13, and districts 5, 8 & 10 had uncontested races.  WIProud

  • Emplify Health will soon offer a new emergency mental health care program called Empath—based at the newly constructed facility on the Gundersen campus—in La Crosse. The unit will treat patients in the emergency room and allow discharge within 24 hours while planning to add staff after a recent closing in Eau Claire.  WIZM
  • Viterbo University held its second annual Respond Together summit on April 3 to show local health workers how to help people with opioid and substance use problems—grant director Erin Miess said speakers with real-life experience and care providers shared what worked well and what needed improvement.  WIProud
  • Gundersen will open Wisconsin's first Emergency Psychiatry Assessment, Treatment and Healing unit in La Crosse to address mental health gaps—reducing waiting times for services.  La Crosse Tribune
