- ➤ In April, which marks Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Family and Children's Center—serving families for over 140 years—has launched a campaign to raise awareness about child abuse in our community. The center will host an art contest this Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at FCC Winona and a Winner's Celebration on April 17th at WNB Financial, urging residents to report any suspected abuse immediately. - ➤ At Highground Veterans Memorial Park, a family tree art workshop on Apr 7 let local residents honor loved ones with mixed media canvases—Linda Brey, who used old photos to celebrate her son and family history, joined the effort. The project will continue with another workshop on May 4 and a public display on September 21 for International Day of Peace. WIProud
- ➤ Residents in La Crosse and nearby communities may get a free smoke detector installation on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. through the Sound the Alarm event run by the Red Cross of Wisconsin Southwest Chapter and local fire departments—participants can receive up to three smoke alarms and one carbon monoxide detector while updating their home’s evacuation plan. - ➤ Around 11 p.m. April 5th, the fire department responded to a house fire on the 1200 block of East Avenue in La Crosse where crews saw flames coming from the back of the house and only a pet died from smoke inhalation as the fire remains under investigation. WIProud

- ➤ Jacob Sciammas and Jamie Schloegel pitched as the only pair competing as conductor wannabes for the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra on La Crosse Talk, representing LCNI. They discussed plans that include an April 24 trivia fundraiser at the Rivoli — voting ends April 28 and winners will perform on May 3. WIZM
- ➤ The La Crosse Area Heritage Center now displays a Hmong Story Cloth exhibit for Hmong Heritage Month that features 19 unique cloths documenting Hmong culture and the struggles during the Secret War. The exhibit is open Thursdays through Sundays until June 29th—local visitors can see rare art that shares the lived history of Hmong people. WIProud
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Beginning Monday, April 14th, Highway 16 will be under construction for most of summer from La Crosse Street to Kinney Coulee Road — just before the Blaine's Farm and Fleet entrance. The Wisconsin DOT said northbound traffic will remain on the highway while southbound drivers will be detoured along US 53 and I-90 until bridge repairs and intersection upgrades allow one lane in each direction. - ➤ Federal layoffs from the low-income home energy program have left over 9,000 households in Crawford, La Crosse, Monroe and Vernon Counties without a clear plan for $4.1 billion in aid. Local officials warned that the disconnection moratorium will end on April 15 and many residents could soon face higher heating and cooling bills. News8000
- ➤ La Crosse approved a docking agreement with American Cruise Lines that lets the American Queen and other riverboats berth at Riverside Park for 10 years—this deal, which pays the city $20,000 a year, marks the return of the vessels after a three-year period in Winona. WIZM

Pizza, a movie and a message: FSPA hosts free Earth Day event
In recognition of Earth Day, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration are hosting a free pizza and movie night on April 10 at the Rivoli Theatre. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with complimentary pizza, followed by a special screening of "The Letter: A Message for Our Earth" at 5:30 p.m. Registration required.
