GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local farmers and state lawmakers voiced concerns Monday at the WAFER food pantry about federal proposals to cut funding for farm programs amid rising food insecurity where one in three households struggles to access food. Lawmakers argued that these cuts may remove funds already approved—jeopardizing both immediate food access and programs that help train future farmers.  WIZM
  • At Monday's board meeting, supervisors heard plans to sell county land in West Salem for a Country Boom music festival venue and to develop 111 acres that may include about 300 new homes while the Ho-Chunk Nation and West Salem School District also proposed ideas. The county executive committee will review the proposals today — considering a recommendation for public hearings as some supervisors expressed concerns about noise at the Lakeview nursing home.  WIZM
  • Four county highways in La Crosse will close for one day for culvert replacement, with work scheduled between today and April 15—project work aims to improve drainage systems.  La Crosse Tribune
  • On Monday, cuts to the Emergency Food Assistance Program left the WAFER Food Pantry with half its usual government food supply—no eggs and only a small donation of milk. Local officials and farmers warned that these cuts may make it harder for many families to get fresh produce and other foods as inflation drives up costs, and they hope the state budget will add some relief later.  La Crosse Tribune
