COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local volunteers are needed to join the River Clean Up event this Saturday, May 9 at four boat landings. The event, which has gathered trash for 32 years, includes stops at 7th Street (Green Island) Landing, Logan Street Boat Ramp, Fred Funk Landing and West Landing.  WIZM
  • The Parenting Place diaper bank received a $25,212 grant on Monday from the La Crosse Area Community Foundation to help nearly 900 families get needed diapers. The donation aims to ease shortages that keep some parents from sending their kids to day care or working.  WIZM
  • La Crosse County celebrates National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week by recognizing 911 dispatchers who handle an average of 100 urgent calls daily. The county credits advanced call-taking technology for boosting response times and supporting seven law enforcement agencies, eight fire departments and other first responders.  News8000

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Severe storms over the past few days caused damage from the Plains to the Midwest. A tornado touched down near Gilman with minor damage, and the National Weather Service in La Crosse is still assessing impacts as forecasters warned of additional storms with giant hail and strong wind gusts.  WIZM

  • The La Crosse Tribune is featuring archived stories and photos from the 1965 flood when the Mississippi River crested at 17.7 feet on April 21. The exhibit gives locals a unique glimpse of the community’s past challenges and resilience.  La Crosse Tribune

  • Jana Yashinsky was named principal of Eagle Bluff Elementary by the Onalaska School Board (approved Monday night) and will start her new role July 1 as Todd Saner retires.  News8000
  • Seventh-graders at Longfellow Middle School use VR headsets from the Illinois Holocaust Museum to listen to survivor stories & visit recreated concentration camp sites for a more engaging look at history.  News8000
  • A new UW-La Crosse parking ramp will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Thursday across from the Lowe Center for the Arts on Vine Street. The ramp creates 550 parking spaces + 440 extra spaces compared to the previous surface lot.  WIZM
  • Menomonie High School hired former La Crosse Central head coach Mitch Olson as its new football coach, according to the Menomonie Area School District. Olson led the Riverhawks to three consecutive Mississippi Valley Conference championships and replaced Mike Sinz, who resigned for a role at UW-Eau Claire — the change represents a fresh step for local school sports.  News8000
  • La Crosse Health Science Academy is training students for healthcare careers with hands-on lessons and classroom learning. The program connects learners with local experts (nurses and technicians) to build essential job skills.  News8000

  • The Onalaska Public Transport Committee will meet soon to discuss adding taxi service aimed at expanding local transit options in Onalaska — officials will consider moving forward with improved mobility for residents.  News8000
  • A city survey shows two-thirds of 305 residents oppose adding bike lanes to Green Bay Street, detailed in Tuesday's Bicycle-Pedestrian Advisory Committee agenda at City Hall. Supporters suggest a protected lane from West Avenue to Losey Boulevard while concerns include traffic & lost parking.  WIZM
