  • Liz Filter, now president of the Vernon Area Rehabilitation Center, celebrated its 50th anniversary on La Crosse Talk — sharing how the nonprofit founded by her dad has grown to serve about 1,000 people at 13 locations, including three in La Crosse.  WIZM
  • Carbon Cannabis, Sensi, and Stacks Family Farms will host the 4th annual 420 on Front Street at the La Crosse Center (April 18, 4–8 p.m.) with a casino night that will offer prizes like a year of free gummies, live music, food, a vendor market, movies, tarot readings, and raffles (tickets cost $5).  News8000

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A wind gust blew a hay bale from a truck and trailer that struck a semi’s windshield near Knutson Valley Lane in the Town of Chimney Rock on Tuesday—forcing the driver to lose control and jackknife the semi on Highway 93, leading to a two-hour road closure, the driver being airlifted in critical condition, and his dog being safely picked up by his son while authorities cited the truck driver for an unsecured load.  News8000

  • A 50-year-old man from Black River Falls was arrested on April 14th at 12:16 a.m. near a Kwik Trip in West Salem after a police officer saw he was driving badly and looked like he used drugs—he now faces a 10th OWI charge, a $1,000 cash bond and a preliminary hearing on April 25th.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newly-elected mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey was sworn in at 4 p.m. Tuesday as the City Council reorganized after the April election and five new members took office along with three returning incumbents. The La Crosse County Board held its yearly organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday and selected board officials for a 12-month term while county supervisor seats will be contested in the (April 2026 election).  WIZM
  • La Crosse officially swore in Shaundel Washington-Spivey as its new mayor Tuesday afternoon — he beat council candidate Chris Kahlow by 450 votes in April — and new council members were sworn in. He said his first priority is to connect with city staff and directors.  News8000
  • The Holmen Police Department said it received a $15,000 grant from Our Rescue nonprofit to upgrade its digital forensic equipment—tools that unlock phones, computers, and tablets used in cases including human trafficking. The grant supports investigations across 16 departments in six counties and follows use of the equipment in unlocking 75 devices in 2024.  News8000
