  • La Crosse police rescued ducklings trapped in a drain early today — officers safely freed the young birds and contacted animal control to check on their condition.  News8000
  • Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers for Neighbors Day on Saturday at The Nature Place at Myrick Park to help elderly and disabled residents prep their yards for spring. Cleanup runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and volunteers receive tools + supplies and a Chicken Q ticket, + community bonding.  WIZM
  • A celebration of life is scheduled today at the La Crosse Center’s Riverside Ballroom to honor pioneering heart surgeon Dr. A. Erik Gundersen, whose legacy in local healthcare lives on; remarks begin at 2 p.m. (colleagues remember his caring mentorship).  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Emerson Elementary School was declared a local historic landmark on Thursday by the La Crosse Heritage Preservation Commission (vote 5-2), despite objections from the school district. The 1940 building on Campbell Road east of Veterans Memorial Stadium will be preserved as students move to a new school under construction.  WIZM
  • Western Technical College’s automotive program hosted 'The People Behind The Wrench' event today, where 38 students showed off new auto repair skills for family and friends. Staff said the event gives students a chance to display their training in modern auto work + community support.  WEAU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Burn bans are in effect today in the Village of Stoddard and Town of Bergen because low humidity, high temperatures, and gusty winds raise wildfire risks. Officials urge residents to dispose of smoking materials properly and avoid burning any combustible materials outdoors.  WIZM
  • City of La Crosse will host its 37th annual Arbor Day celebration with tree-planting events and local activities. Organizers invite residents to join the festivities (designed to boost community green practices) as the event unfolds later this season.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin farmers urge Congress to pass a new farm bill to update programs critical to agriculture (crop insurance and food assistance) while addressing rising fertilizer and fuel costs amid changing market conditions. The House Rules Committee will consider the bill next week.  News8000

  • Registration opens April 27 for Steppin’ Out in Pink, a fundraising walk for breast cancer research benefiting Emplify Health by Gundersen plus Early Bird rates cost $20 until June 30, with the walk scheduled for September 12 at Riverside Park.
