  • The La Crosse Granny Basketball team hosted a charity tournament at Logan Middle School Saturday to raise funds for New Horizons, a shelter that helps survivors of domestic violence. Teams from Viroqua and Iowa joined local players aged 50 and older who competed with vintage basketball rules—like a no jumping rule—to create a nostalgic event.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local performers participated in the Sidekick Audition Showdown at La Crosse Community Theatre last Saturday to try to be Theatreman's official sidekick. All funds raised will support the Symphony Orchestra's education programs and the Community Theatre's Altra Star Academy—boosting local arts education.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Wisconsin high school students competed on Saturday in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition where the winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year and the runner-up’s piece will be shown in Representative Derrick Van Orden’s office. A panel of university professors selected the winning art from about 35 entries — showcasing the region’s creative talent.  News8000
  • UW-La Crosse students in the Medical Mycology course at UW-L discovered a type of fungus with potential to fight antibiotic resistance + they plan further studies to determine its role in new treatments.  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ho-Chunk Nation held a ceremony Saturday to designate a memorial highway that honors tribal members who served as code talkers during World War II after Governor Tony Evers signed the legislation last year. The highway begins at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 near Tomah — it extends westward to the Wisconsin-Minnesota border.  News8000

  • High school athletes in Wisconsin will soon be able to sign name, image and likeness deals after the WIAA approved a rule change on Friday that bans deals linked to school teams or logos. The new rules set clear limits to ensure deals do not interfere with school activities— and they provide guidelines for fair play in local sports.  News8000
