COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sparta and Tomah area school districts hosted a luncheon honoring military families in celebration of the Month of the Military Child near Fort McCoy - Volk Field Air National Guard Base. Local high school JROTC students presented colors as a formal tribute to the support role of these families.  News8000
  • La Crosse city leaders and school district officials invite residents to share ideas on the future of north side swimming pools as the Logan Middle outdoor pool will close this summer and the aging Logan High pool needs repairs. Meetings begin April 29, 6:00 p.m. at Black River Beach House + surveys will be mailed next week.  News8000
  • La Crosse celebrated Arbor Day on Friday morning at Myrick Park by planting a honey locust tree and spreading wood chips, joined by kindergarteners. Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey declared the city's 37th event as part of a nearly 40-year tradition + the 154th anniversary of Arbor Day.  WIZM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Children's Museum presents the 'Pigs Can Fly' exhibit to engage kids with interactive art and creative displays. The exhibit opened April 27 and will run through the summer.  News8000
  • The 22nd annual Between the Bluffs Beverages and Bites Festival is underway at the Oktoberfest Grounds with over 70 vendors serving craft drinks, artisan cheeses and specialty meats; organizers have added bingo, pretzel-necklace making and live demonstrations to engage the community.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Quartell 'Q' Roberson, a dean of students in La Crosse, credits his caring approach for building strong student relationships — a method that helps students succeed — as he is featured as a hometown hero.  News8000
  • Trevor Sprague was elected as the new president of the La Crosse School Board during Monday night's reorganization meeting. He will serve through 2029 while new board member Loretta Hass begins her role to boost community engagement + transparency.  News8000
  • Education officials preview new laws that aim to boost classroom safety for students before they are debated by lawmakers. The proposals will be discussed in upcoming sessions (as part of ongoing efforts to protect kids) and could lead to changes in school policies.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • La Crosse is preparing to install 2.2 miles of water piping along Highway 16 + work is expected to finish by October to improve the water supply after PFAS contamination affected local wells.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Xcel Energy began utility work on Main Street between 24th & 26th on Monday as crews replaced traffic signals near Main Street & Losey Boulevard. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes like West Avenue or Third & Fourth Streets.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • Registration is open for La Crosse’s annual Steppin’ Out in Pink fundraiser—raising money for breast cancer awareness—and features a walk with vendors and a special breakfast for survivors; the event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12.  News8000

  • To keep high school athletes competing for state titles, the WIAA signed an eight-year extension with UW-La Crosse & Explore La Crosse to host the State Track & Field Championships at Roger Harring Stadium through 2034; this year's meet is scheduled for June 5-6.  News8000
