COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The La Crosse County Library announced that the Onalaska Public Library will host a unique petting zoo event using string instruments instead of animals on May 17 from 12 p.m.—2 p.m. Musicians from the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra and Leithold Music will help children explore the instruments in a free family event.  WIProud
  • The Milwaukee Brewers are partnering with the La Crosse Police Department to distribute comic book-inspired trading card prints to engage local youth—cards featuring fan favorites will combine baseball with classic comic art. La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron said the program supports community policing efforts—helping officers build closer ties with kids in the community.  WIProud

  • UW-La Crosse biochemistry students are showcasing their research at a reverse career fair—local employers learn about their skills and adaptability.  La Crosse Tribune
  • At UW-La Crosse, students are using DNA barcoding in a plant taxonomy course to study local plant roots found near Grandad Bluff. Assistant professor Adam Schneider integrates molecular tools to connect classroom lessons with community research—helping students learn essential identification skills.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of La Crosse has launched a new grant program that offers eligible low-to-moderate income residents free energy assessments & no-cost efficiency upgrades while providing up to $25,000 in additional federal funding for major improvements. Local contractor Green Homeowners United will carry out the work, and more than 300 households are expected to benefit.  WIProud
  • County officials began replacing several culverts along Highway YY on May 6 when the road was closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and the work will continue through May 8 before resuming on May 12 and 13; the project depends on completed power line repairs.  WIZM
  • Arcadia’s entire police department resigned recently to pursue other jobs—leaving only an interim chief and forcing the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office in Whitehall to handle calls that may take 20 to 30 minutes to reach. City Mayor John Kimmel said the new chief, Nic Scholl, will work to rebuild the department.  WIProud

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say at least seven people in six states became sick from salmonella linked to backyard poultry in February and March—one case was reported locally while cases occurred in Missouri, Florida, Illinois, South Dakota and Utah. The investigation is continuing.  News8000
