- ➤ Local mail carriers will collect nonperishable food donations on Saturday, May 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. as part of the 33rd Stamp Out Hunger food drive+ local pantries are reporting increased need as families prepare for summer, following a 31,000-pound collection last year. WIZM
- ➤ A local Fresh Start program is in jeopardy due to recent Americorps funding cuts—12 at risk youth are left without a supervisor to build a home in Strum, which has halted the crew's work. Western Dairyland is assisting the program with job placement and is searching for contractors to complete the project. WIProud
- ➤ The GROW Plant Sale ran Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Western Technical College Horticulture Center and is continuing today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with different activities each day. Thursday’s event offered a hanging basket build and garden appetizers, today features a Mother’s Day Gift Make and Take, and Saturday will include a square foot gardening workshop from 10 to 11 a.m.—adding more variety for local gardeners—while the plant sale remains open. - ➤ La Crosse firefighters rescued two people from a burning home on the east side early Thursday morning — they arrived at 1:25 a.m. on Losey Boulevard with eight fire crews and police on scene, and four cats were also safely rescued with no injuries reported while cause and damage are under investigation. - ➤ Students and staff evacuated from Tomah High School after a bomb threat message written on a bathroom stall was received+ police later searched the building and confirmed there was no evidence of a bomb. WIProud
- ➤ La Crosse police are searching for 63-year-old Curt Grinde who was last in contact with his family on May 7 at 9 p.m. and is described as 5’10” and weighing 270 pounds with long blonde hair wearing a multi-colored Huk t-shirt while riding a black Super 73 e-bike—his phone last pinged near La Crescent in Minnesota. - ➤ River Cleanup La Crosse will hold its 32nd annual event on Saturday as volunteers with boats, canoes, or kayaks remove trash from local waterways—organizers report that over 800,000 pounds of trash have been collected over the years, including recycled blue barrels and tires. Volunteers will meet at one of four landing spots and then attend an afterparty at Copeland Park Shelter with food, drinks, and door prizes. WIZM
