COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans returned home on the Freedom Honor Flight today after a group photo at the Marine Corps Memorial; weather in Washington delayed their bus departure and the flight landed an hour late. Family, friends and community members welcomed the veterans with music from the Sparta High School band, welcome signs, flags and balloons — a warm tribute to their service.  WIZM
  • Today, as UW-La Crosse students move out, the campus offers donation stations near Angell Hall and near Reuter Hall and the stadium for dropping off vacuums, microwaves, sofas, futons, and chairs — items that anyone can pick up. The stations will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow to keep usable items from going to waste.  WIZM

  • A business training program at UW-La Crosse received a national award from the Small Business Administration for excellence and innovation, recognizing its role in linking students with local companies. Director Anne Hlavacka accepted the award at a small business academy in La Crosse sponsored by the lieutenant governor’s office.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wisconsin lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban cell phone use in classrooms during instructional time—allowing exceptions for emergencies and health management. The legislation passed the state Assembly and now awaits a Senate vote, which could join Wisconsin with 19 other states with similar restrictions.  News8000

  • Hidden Springs Peony Farm is about to burst into bloom with 16,000 peonies inviting visitors to enjoy the colorful fields. Co-owner Laura Kubes and her husband Bryan run the 2.5-acre farm north of Spring Grove, Minn—with picnic events planned on May 31, June 7 and June 14 during the peak bloom from Memorial Day to Father’s Day.  WIZM
