CRIME NEWS

  • La Crosse police said a person was shot shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Thursday on the 900 block of 5th Avenue South, leaving non-life-threatening injuries—authorities named 28-year-old Diontae D. Booth as a person of interest and ask anyone with information to contact police.  News8000
  • La Crosse man Diontae Booth, 28, was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and additional offenses after a domestic incident on May 15 at 11:28 a.m. on 5th Avenue South where he shot a 20-year-old woman in the face after discovering his drugs and gun were missing — a warrant has been issued for his arrest.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Logan High School took part in a downtown scavenger hunt last Friday to learn about La Crosse’s history. They began and ended at Main Street library — using books and clues to answer 40 questions that led them to sites like the old Hollywood Theater and Leithold Music.  WIZM
  • Logan High School sophomores participated in the La Crosse History Hunt on Friday, exploring downtown and solving puzzles—engaging with local businesses and library archives to learn about the city’s past.  WEAU
  • Over the past four years, UW-La Crosse’s Win-Win program helped 126 former students finish their degrees—44 earned bachelor’s degrees and 82 received Associate degrees—by connecting them with help from various campus offices.  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local elected officials on the La Crosse County Board and city council opposed a state order that would close two north-side rail crossings near the Amtrak depot when county supervisors voted on Thursday night to keep them open. Officials said that closing the crossings would force heavy rush-hour traffic onto just one street-level crossing—without an overpass—risking severe delays.  WIZM
  • Wisconsin state Sen. Brad Pfaff joined the WIZM studio on May 12 to discuss the state budget process, the missing no tax on tips bill, and his local listening sessions in the 32nd District. He also outlined plans to introduce bills on insulin cost caps, tax relief, economic development & housing, and to recognize the UW-La Crosse gymnastics team for their national title.  WIZM

  • At Emplify by Gunderson, first responders tested their skills at the annual trauma symposium held Friday in La Crosse—participants practiced triage and a mock crime scene to improve emergency care.
