COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saturday morning, over 150 riders gathered at Great River Harley-Davidson in Onalaska for the 30th Big Bikes for Little Tikes ride, raising funds for Tucker Lovelace of Viroqua who faces seizures and mobility challenges — funding will help buy a $15,000 specialized medical bed not covered by insurance.  WIZM
  • Emergency crews in La Crosse are preparing for increased water activity on Memorial Day weekend after several rescues last summer showed the need for safety; they advise wearing life jackets, avoiding watercraft use under the influence, and staying calm to help prevent incidents.  News8000
  • Bill Soper of the La Crosse Area Family YMCA announced his retirement Monday morning after 31 years as CEO; he will step down on Sept. 4 as the board works with regional partners to ensure a smooth transition.  WIZM
  • A downtown parking ramp is being cleaned today — work crews are pressure washing and scrubbing the structure to improve hygiene and safety.  News8000

  • Since Allegiant Air began flights in February, La Crosse Airport has seen passenger numbers climb to over 5,200 in April—the highest monthly total since September 2022. United Airlines is set to start service in October.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Onalaska High School added Michael McMahon’s name to its Wall of Honor on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., honoring the 2024 graduate who died on March 9 during a Marine training accident (he played football at Concordia University before enlisting).  News8000
  • Student filmmakers at La Crosse Polytechnic School showcased their documentaries at the Rivoli Monday in a project teaming up with the PBS Wisconsin Youth Media Project that focused on local topics such as La Croix and Pearl Street. The event gave students a creative way to learn new skills.  News8000
  • U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Western Technical University today to stress the need for skilled workforce training to bridge the growing labor gap by 2030 (she also pushed for local control over education policies).  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Hall and the school district are hosting two sessions on an indoor pool plan to potentially replace the closed North Side Community Pool (nearly $1 million in repairs). Meetings are Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Logan Middle School and Wednesday online, with a community survey coming soon.  WIZM

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new ambulance service launched yesterday to boost emergency care in rural Wisconsin — the program targets remote areas with long wait times for faster response.  News8000
