COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City and county leaders held a news conference on Wednesday, May 20 at the Collective on Fourth to launch the Homes for 100 campaign to raise money for housing 100 homeless residents. Donations from $1,250 to $15,000+ will help fund units where rent is 30% of income.  WIZM
  • Due to low water levels on the Mississippi River, the Lansing ferry now carries only nine vehicles per trip today, causing longer wait times for drivers crossing between Iowa & Wisconsin. The reduced capacity will continue until the river levels rise back to normal.  WIZM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new non-stop flight landed in La Crosse today, offering residents direct access to additional destinations. Airline officials say the service will expand local travel options - boosting connectivity and potentially supporting nearby businesses.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Bluffs Elementary School celebrated Wisconsin School Garden Day with a ribbon cutting for its new garden (its first year of garden programming) as part of a district-wide effort with nonprofit GROW to bring hands-on learning to every public elementary school.  News8000
  • On Thursday, more than 200 seventh-grade students visited Western Technical College for Junior Achievement’s interactive career showcase (featuring eight organizations and trade demonstrations in construction, marine diving, and welding).  News8000
  • Western Tech has named three finalists for its next president, and the board will review the candidates soon as the school prepares to choose its new leader.  News8000

  • Candidate Rebecca Cooke visited La Crosse earlier today as part of a 19-county tour addressing small business challenges and economic issues; she hosted a roundtable and toured Gundersen Tri State Ambulance + First Supply Distribution Center + Sprout Early Learning Center to listen to local business leaders.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • A free women's health series called On the Couch with Dr. Jill will premiere Tuesday, May 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Pump House Regional Arts Center (119 King Street), offering expert panel discussions during National Women's Health Month. Registration is preferred.  News8000

SPORTS NEWS

  • UWL (University of Wisconsin-La Crosse) will host the NCAA Division III Track and Field Nationals soon, inviting collegiate athletes to compete in track events and energize the local community.  News8000
