COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club at the Amie Mathy Center for Recreation and Education on Viterbo campus celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday — honoring top attendee Becky Strittmater and scholarship recipient Nathaniel Powell. Director Jake Erickson said the club will open a new facility in Onalaska and expand its program near Logan High School.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University students in Adam Schneider’s plant taxonomy course conducted tests to identify a mysterious root found in a La Crosse reservoir. Their study — which used lab experiments — is expected to give the city key information for tracking and managing its water resources.  La Crosse Tribune
  • UW-La Crosse invites former students who almost finished their degrees to complete their studies through the Win-Win Program—an effort that has already helped 126 students in the past four years. The program targets those with at least 50 credits who have not enrolled in the past 2.5 years and is designed to boost education and career outcomes statewide.  WEAU
  • Emplify Health by Gundersen celebrated the graduation of six interns from the Project Search program — a yearlong effort that teaches work-based skills to young people with learning difficulties — and many local families marked this achievement. One graduate, Krystyn Lilla, began working as a patient attendant, and the program will continue to offer job coaching for up to three months to support new employees.  WIProud

  • The State Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will start mandatory avian flu testing on milk samples from dairy farms on Monday—each farm will send one sample monthly to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory—local farmers say it will add to existing quality checks without extra work.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • The STAR Center’s Rock Steady Boxing class has helped local participants with Parkinson’s, including Charlie Krupa, slow their disease progression—doctors noted fewer signs of decline after he began the program. The center has expanded its offerings at the new La Crosse Street facility and now holds more daily classes to support adults with disabilities.  La Crosse Tribune

  • Anglers from across the country fished in La Crosse on Thursday as the National Walleye Tour began its two-day tournament. Each competitor brought their five largest catches to be weighed—defending champion Tom Huynh said he was happy to take on both local and seasoned anglers.  News8000
