Good morning, La Crosse. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 28th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday morning, residents lined Main Street and West Avenue for the Memorial Day Parade that featured veterans from service organizations, youth groups, and marching bands as they marched to Oak Grove Cemetery. Many stayed for the 10 a.m. ceremony — the parade lasted less than 20 minutes and honored those who served.  WIZM
  • Brad Schwaegerl, a homeless veteran known for supporting La Crosse’s unsheltered community, died in his sleep on May 11 with his loyal dog Zenn by his side. His passing leaves a gap in a community that long relied on his steady leadership—neighbors now worry about the loss of his vital support.  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • La Crosse officials proposed doubling stormwater fees from $53.92 to $118.64 per ERU to cover rising costs—if approved by the Finance and Personnel Committee on June 5 and later by full council, the increase would take effect on July 1 and add about $9.89 a month.  News8000
  • La Crosse Planning and Development Director Andrea Trane is leading efforts to update the city's 40-year-old zoning rules — aiming to allow duplexes, triplexes and smaller multifamily units. The city hired a consulting firm to review the codes — and community feedback will be gathered at upcoming neighborhood meetings.  WIZM
  • La Crosse County residents (over 10,000 households) who depend on FoodShare may lose benefits if a federal budget bill tightens work rules and paperwork for SNAP, potentially putting up to 90,000 people statewide at risk. The proposed changes could increase reliance on local food pantries as the bill now waits in the U.S. Senate.  News8000
