COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity celebrated a milestone in La Crosse’s Logan Northside with the ReNew the Block project adding pollinator gardens, walking paths and stormwater fixes at Logan Middle School on Thursday — the event featured music, food trucks and guided tours to raise funds for an edible schoolyard and paver walkway.  News8000
  • The 8th Annual Al’s Musky Challenge was held yesterday in La Crosse as local anglers competed to catch muskies. Organizers said the contest brought the community together to enjoy a beloved outdoor tradition.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ho-Chunk Nation broke ground on a new cultural resource center in Black River Falls on Thursday, May 28 — the project will host community programs that celebrate local traditions.  News8000
  • The La Crosse Area Heritage Center is opening the 'Drink in the Design' exhibit that displays local brewing and advertisement history with posters, signs, paintings, and beer packaging. It will be available during operating hours every Friday through Sunday until Oct. 25 (featuring items donated by local collectors).  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, West Salem Middle School students built cardboard boats in their annual challenge to test engineering skills and creative problem-solving. The event engaged students and promoted teamwork at the school campus.  News8000
  • The board at Western Technical College met Thursday morning in La Crosse to review three candidates—Wade Hackbarth, Dr. Kirk Bennett, and Dr. Tonya Wagner—with a final decision expected in mid-June.  News8000
  • Viterbo graduate Gabe Holderby will begin dental school at Southern Illinois University soon — he credits strong pre-dentistry guidance for his readiness.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Gabe Holderby, a Viterbo biology graduate, will attend Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine to study dental care and prepare to serve patients with compassion.  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders have received an application to repair outdoor staircases and restore the iron fence at Hixon House between 6th and 7th Streets near City Hall. The proposal — under review by the heritage preservation commission Thursday — aims to update the historic property to meet current codes.  WIZM
  • The North Community Library on Kane Street will be declared surplus and put up for sale next week after closing in June to save the city about $180,000 a year — a move backed by the economic and community development commission and spurring local group efforts.  WIZM

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 2, the La Crosse Club held its Kentucky Derby Party and donated $6,200 to St. Clare Health Mission which provides free healthcare to locals. The mission is preparing to move to a new facility at the corner of 4th — Jackson streets later this year.  WIZM
