  • La Crosse offers many pool choices besides Pettibone and Black River beaches. The city built Memorial Pool at UWL in 1938 for over $70,000, closed it in 2016 due to high costs, and reopened a rebuilt version in 2019 with the old pool house kept—local schools have also maintained pools on campus.  WIZM

  • Country Chicks Catering in Coon Valley is hosting an open house at their new event venue on June 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. – the space holds 300 guests and will soon host wedding receptions. In Onalaska, a Crumbl shop will open on June 6 with hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jersey Mike’s has a new owner after Kyle Murphy purchased it on May 21, and the Joann fabrics store closed Tuesday.  La Crosse Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • Toudeng Thao, a 59-year-old man from La Crosse, was sentenced yesterday to 7 ½ years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley after pleading guilty to distributing methamphetamine — he was arrested last January during a traffic stop while carrying a large amount of the drug.  WEAU
  • La Crosse Police and US Marshals arrested 28-year-old Diontae D. Booth just before 5 p.m. Thursday on the 1900 block of Rose Street—he faces five charges including attempted 1st Degree Intentional Homicide for shooting his ex-girlfriend on May 15 while she recovers—and he remains without bond in the La Crosse County Jail.  WIZM

  • More than 100 people walked downtown on Thursday after a mental health awareness ceremony at the county human services building in La Crosse. Board chair Tina Tryggestad thanked health workers during the event — mayor Shaundel Washington Spivey joined the walk to underline the need for community support.  WIZM
