COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three public pools in La Crosse — Erickson Pool, Veterans Memorial Pool and Northside Community Pool — will open this Saturday for summer swimming through August 17 at a daily admission of $5 per person.  News8000
  • La Crosse County Historical Society staff received training on Monday from Dementia Care Specialists at ADRC to learn how to assist visitors with dementia during June’s Dementia Awareness Month — the session focused on recognizing symptoms and adjusting communication with affected individuals.  News8000
  • La Crosse pools — Erickson, Northside Community, and Veterans Memorial — will open this Saturday and run until August 17 at a $5 admission fee with a discount for residents using a pool punch pass. Erickson Pool reopened after repair work and will host summer swimming lessons.  WIZM
  • Dahl Automotive donated over $36,000 to the La Crosse YMCA Monday morning as part of Subaru’s Share the Love campaign— the funds will improve the YMCA’s facilities and expand low-cost program offerings for community members.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • La Crosse Education Association president Jill Schams, a music teacher at Southern Bluffs Elementary, discussed how teachers will finish this week before summer and work with the district on contract changes—she noted that while school boards now set cellphone rules, the state legislature may soon review a uniform policy.  WIZM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the La Crosse Board of Public Works voted three to one to raise storm water utility bills from $53 to $118 per household starting July 1 to rebuild $500,000 in city reserves. The proposal will be reviewed by the Finance and Personnel Committee on June 5 and by the Common Council on June 12—meetings open to the public.  WEAU
  • Several road projects started Monday morning in La Crosse County as crews replaced a culvert under County Highway M near the south end of Highway 14/61—vehicles were detoured via County YY while work began on City Loop Road in West Salem and on culvert replacements on County Highway JB with daily closures from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. that are expected to finish by July 7.  WIZM

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross warns that summer brings a rise in accidents and a drop in regular donors, which could strain hospital blood supplies across the Chippewa Valley. They are offering a $15 Amazon gift card for donations in June — plus a chance to win a $7,000 gift card — to encourage more people to donate blood.  WIProud
  • Dr. William Klein told viewers that men in La Crosse must see a doctor regularly during Men's Health Month as many risk a 5.4-year shorter life by delaying check-ups and embracing risky behaviors. He explained that early screenings for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer can save lives—encouraging family members to support loved ones in overcoming cultural barriers.  News8000
  • Downtown La Crosse had protests last week after a mental health event on Thursday; on Friday, Citizen Action of Wisconsin held a protest near Cass Street outside Congressman Van Orden’s office to stop Medicaid cuts that could lower benefits. Speakers like Kristie Tweed and Dana Horstman said the cuts might hurt locals who depend on Medicaid for care — help that lets them work and live.  WIZM
