  • Cat scratching posts are now available for purchase at Coulee Region Humane Society from a campaign by the La Crosse Fire Department and Emplify Health by Gundersen. Over 100 donated rugs have been turned into custom posts ($5 per post) until supplies run out.  WEAU
  • Carol Taebel has been named the La Crosse Area Community Foundation's Forever Friends Award recipient after 55 years as a teacher, volunteer, and supporter of local causes. Her charitable funds support groups including the English Lutheran Church, Gundersen Health System, La Crosse Public Education Foundation, Aptiv, and Coulee Region Humane Society — a group she has long aided — and her work will continue to help our community.  News8000
  • Al’s Musky Challenge, the annual fundraiser by the Rotary Club of La Crosse Downtown Club, began on June 6 and will continue until October 6 as co-founder Al Louis fishes for muskies on Lake Vermillion, about thirty miles south of Canada+ to raise funds. Donations will help local groups with GROW upgrading teaching spaces+ Big Brothers Big Sisters funding youth mental health programs and La Crosse Community Theatre operating its summer youth program.  WIProud

CRIME NEWS

  • A Fountain City man, Arthur McMullin, was sentenced to 225 days time served on a charge of obstructing an officer after hiding his wife's corpse for six weeks while caring for over 70 neglected animals and was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on other charges—he will now undergo mental health evaluations to determine whether he needs institutional care or can be released under supervision.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • ArtSPIRE will take place at Riverside Park on June 14th from 10 am to 7 pm, with music and art activities that will attract people from near and far. The festival features returning acts and new performances (including the Mexican Folk Art Collective) and is set to use the park’s open space (a change from past years) to offer a fresh setting for the celebration.  WIProud

  • The WIAA state track and field meet is scheduled for this weekend in La Crosse and is expected to boost the local economy + drawing athletes and visitors.  News8000

  • On Thursday morning, Special Olympics athletes from La Crosse joined local law enforcement—led by Sheriff John Siegel and Police Chief Shawn Kudron—in a torch run from the Beach House along Rose Street to the eagle viewing point near I-90 at Black River Beach before heading to Whitewater for the state Special Olympics games that continue at UW-Whitewater today.  WIZM
