COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, local events include the La Crosse County Dairy Breakfast in West Salem from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. with family activities and a Vernon County Dairy Breakfast at Lepke Family Farm from 7 to 11 a.m.—Coon Creek Trout Fest runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Goose Island County Park hosts a family day at 9:30 a.m. while today a Stone Temple Pilots concert begins at 6:30 p.m. In addition, Sunday offers Artspire in Riverside Park from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. along with Winona’s Steamboat Days featuring a parade, craft fair and a fireworks show at 9:45 p.m.  WIZM
  • A local brewery has partnered with Wafer Food Pantry to host the 'Hops for Hunger' event where 10% of Wednesday's sales will support a food recovery project that redirects surplus food to feed those in need—an effort that reflects growing local business and nonprofit collaboration.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jean Taylor, host of Rock Mornings, previewed the second annual Big River Rally in La Crosse that will feature Budweiser Clydesdales trotting downtown and live music from Drowning Pool and other bands on the Oktoberfest grounds. The two-day event on June 27—28 will also offer multiple stunt shows, an S and S Cycle tour, organized rides, a pancake breakfast for veterans and vendors on site.  WIZM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tourism spending in La Crosse County increased by about $12 million in 2024 over the previous year as the area outpaced the state’s 3.5% rise with a 3.9% boost that helped create over 4,000 jobs and generate $36 million in taxes—strong support for the local economy. A USA Cycling Gravel National Championships is scheduled for September 20 in La Crescent and is expected to draw 750 to 1,000 racers and 2,000 to 2,500 spectators.  WIZM

  • La Crosse School District passed city council approval for plans to consolidate its elementary schools into one new building — scheduled to open in 2027.  La Crosse Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, La Crosse city council voted 9—4 to raise the stormwater utility fee effective July 1. The fee will increase by $5 a month this year and $2 a month next year to help cover stormwater management costs.  WIZM
  • At the Moon Tunes concert on Thursday, AFSCME union members used a giant touchscreen at Riverside Park — sending messages to lawmakers to oppose proposed Medicaid cuts that could hurt vulnerable groups. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is now in the Senate where action may come before July 4.  WIZM
  • La Crosse city council voted 9-4 to raise the stormwater rate from $53.92 to $118.94 annually starting July 1—with further increases planned to reach $158.14 by 2029 as officials stressed the need to fund essential maintenance.  La Crosse Tribune
