A 60-year-old Onalaska man, Jay Wiltse, was charged with arson, firearm possession by a felon and felony bail jumping after he set off fireworks in a neighbor’s bathroom earlier this month—he is now held on a $20,000 signature bond.

Western Wisconsin counties broke tourism revenue records in 2024 as visitor numbers reached new highs.
La Crosse County earned $519 million (up 3.4% from 2023) while Chippewa and Vernon counties saw 4.9% rises (to $193 million and $77 million respectively) that will boost local economies.

Governor Tony Evers visited the Collective on Fourth in La Crosse yesterday to celebrate Homeownership Month and stress the need for affordable housing—officials expect the complex to be at capacity by summer.
The West Salem Village Board rejected a parking ordinance—one that would have limited parking on South Leonard Street to two hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.—after local business owners raised concerns over customer access.
Village Administrator Teresa DeLong said the fine was targeted at increasing parking turnover rather than generating revenue.
La Crosse County Board chair Tina Tryggestad said there was no monthly meeting last week and explained plans to sell 111 acres of county-owned farmland in West Salem + plan to deploy an A.I. system for non-emergency 911 calls.
She also noted that the board depends on the state budget and federal funding while next steps for the sale are under review.
Governor Tony Evers declared June 16th Kwik Trip Day to mark the chain’s 60th anniversary—the first store opened in Eau Claire in 1965.
