COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two local nonprofits—the Salvation Army of La Crosse County and Hunger Task Force of La Crosse—provided food to families from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday at The Salvation Army Warehouse amid rising food insecurity and invite families to attend next month's distribution on the third Friday.  News8000
  • The Nature Place in La Crosse restarted its summer camps on June 16 after a federal court ruling on June 5 let service workers return—staff are now careful as they wait to see if next year’s AmeriCorps funding will be restored. The center will run its summer programs until the end of August while they adjust to the new funding situation.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Holmen Area Community Center will hold its second annual Cheese Fest fundraiser today at 10 a.m.—featuring a craft market with cheese-themed food, a mac and cheese contest at noon, a cheese and wine tasting from 2—4 p.m. and live music until 6 p.m. to support its community programs.  WIZM

  • On Thursday night, firefighters controlled a garage fire at 1213 10th Avenue North that displaced both tenants of an Onalaska duplex—improperly disposed fireworks ignited the blaze and damaged the garage and nearby vinyl siding with no injuries reported.  News8000

  • Former La Crosse mayor Mitch Reynolds has joined the MidAmerica Clean Future Alliance — started last fall by the Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative — to use his government experience to bring recycling programs and other environmental actions to cities along the Mississippi River Basin.  La Crosse Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since Memorial Day weekend, the La Crosse County Health Department has tested water at eight public beaches for E. coli levels to keep swimmers and pets safe. If any beach sample exceeds 1,000 colony forming units, it will be closed and results are posted on its website+ social media.  WEAU

  • The 24th-Annual La Crosse Open Logrolling tournament is taking place today at Pettibone Park at 10:30 a.m. with over 70 professional logrollers from as far as Alaska competing for a $5,000 purse, while free food, seating, and a kids zone add to the event's offerings.  WIZM
