COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Setup took place Thursday at the southside Oktoberfest Grounds as crews prepared for the Big River Rally, which will run Friday and Saturday. Bikers from the region will join rides starting Friday at 5 p.m. and a Saturday ride following an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast supporting veterans—music will continue until 11 p.m.  WIZM
  • The La Crosse Area Family YMCA is running its Summer Food program that gives free meals to children 18 and under at 24 local sites every day until August 8 — the program helps ease summer food insecurity.  WIProud
  • The Big River Rally brought motorcycle enthusiasts to La Crosse for a multi-day event featuring a vendor market, stunt shows, and live music—highlighting the region’s scenic Great River Road—while riders head to Viroqua for a veteran’s breakfast today.  News8000
  • On Thursday, the old community center was replaced by the new Dash Center in Onalaska during an indoor ribbon cutting that 100 people attended. Mayor Kim Smith said the $6 million facility provides the only city-run gym which will host events such as the community Thanksgiving dinner—its design overcame weather problems during the opening.  WIZM

  • The La Crosse County Sheriff's Office warned residents about phone scammers who impersonate law enforcement by asking for money to avoid arrest and reminded everyone the office will never call to demand fines or bonds (residents should verify any suspicious calls by contacting the main office or non-emergency dispatch).  News8000
  • Raymond Lewis, a drug trafficking suspect, objected in court to the use of police evidence—such as a report of a drug smell in his car and tinted windows—and Judge Scott Horne will rule on his challenge on August 11th.  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for the La Crosse River and its tributaries as five inches of rain from Monday to Friday caused rising waters that are flooding low-lying areas until Sunday at 6 a.m. A warning for the Black River at Black River Falls began Friday evening and forecasts minor flooding with the river cresting at 47.4 feet later on Friday—County Highway VV and nearby rural roads may also flood.  WIZM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that the DNR can require polluters to clean up toxic PFAS chemicals—Campbell will keep its interim safe water source and is set to finish its well project by 2027. Town Supervisor Lee Donahue said the ruling helps prevent further delays in the community’s plans for water safety.  WIProud
