  • Freedom Honor Flight will make its 33rd round-trip to Washington, D.C. on September 13th—following trips that carried over 3200 local veterans—and organizers are asking for public donations to help cover the $185,000 cost as more than 650 veterans have signed up for future flights.  News8000
  • The Women’s Fund of Greater La Crosse awarded a record $117,000 in 19 grants to local groups that support women through education, health care, and legal aid. Organizers say the funding is meant to help women overcome challenges such as leaving abusive situations + to build a sustainable future.  News8000

  • John Stumlin told Judge Ramona Gonzalez on Monday that he is competent for trial in the 2024 stabbing death of Daniel Riordan at a La Crosse mobile home park after receiving treatment at the Mendota Institute — his pretrial hearing is set for August 20th.  WIZM
  • On July 29th, police marked the 20th anniversary of missing teen Madeline Edman from La Crosse, who disappeared at 15, and they continue to follow leads while urging anyone with tips to call Investigator Andy Rosenow (608-789-7218) and noting her key features (5‑foot‑4, 100 pounds, brown hair, one blue eye, one brown eye, and a leg scar).  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe storms swept through the region overnight, leaving tens of thousands without power in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In La Crosse, 344 customers lost power and restoration in some areas may take up to two days.  News8000

  • The La Crosse City Vision Foundation said it will expand its Safe-Cam program to add cameras in downtown Riverside Park — a plan spurred by the tragic death of Eliotte Heinz and past incidents that aided police — and it aims to raise $50,000 in donations to fund the second phase.  WIProud
