  • La Crosse Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey announced that he will host a series of community roundtables starting in August to gather ideas for improving La Crosse. The first event — 'Level Up La Crosse! Opportunity Knocks' — is set for August 21 at the La Crosse Center south ballroom from 5-7 p.m. and is free to attend.  News8000

  • Ashley for the Arts will begin on August 7th—announcement on Jul 31 provided the start date without detailing planned activities.  News8000
  • Terry Bauer previewed Thursday’s Moon Tunes at Riverside Park, where Fayme Rochelle & the Wax Wings and the Saner & Gibbons Band will perform free live music from 5:30-8 p.m. Local food and drink vendors, free train rides for kids & bike valet parking will be provided at the event.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of La Crosse began construction on the Central High School district office and presented a final exterior design for the New Elementary School while interior and landscaping plans continued to develop. Exterior improvements on State Road were underway and a preliminary building code review with the state was completed — design work will continue as construction ramps up.  News8000
  • T.U.G.G.'s Andy Hughes and Central Booster Club’s Jocelyn Buxton previewed Saturday’s first-ever Riverhawk Rally at All-Star Lanes, where Hughes will perform an acoustic show and take requests—while the fundraiser offers raffles, silent auctions and tip boards with a $60 ticket that includes dinner and a pint glass.  WIZM

  • Residents in La Crosse face an unhealthy air quality warning today from smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires & many continue outdoor activities despite rising breathing problems.   • Ramona Gonzalez, the county’s first female judge who served for 30 years, ended her job Thursday—Joe Veenstra will take the oath at the courthouse today— marking a change in county leadership.  WIZM
  • The City of La Crosse explained its reasons for keeping two northside rail crossings open at a Tuesday hearing — arguing that closing them would hurt local property owners and businesses. DOT officials presented accident data supporting a plan to close some crossings to vehicles — while critics, including council member Barb Janssen and neighborhood groups, opposed the proposal and accepted public comments until midnight tonight.  WIZM
