CRIME NEWS

  • William Brink, 56, of Melrose is charged with robbery with use of force, recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer and battery after a BP gas station robbery in Holmen on Aug 7—he was arrested on Aug 9 at 8:33 a.m. on State Road 35 and faces a $20,000 cash bond.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Crosse Oktoberfest was nominated for Best Oktoberfest in the United States by USA Today’s 10Best awards and has been held since 1961 — the nomination gives the festival a chance for national recognition. Voting is open daily until September 8th and USA Today will announce the winner on September 17th.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rachel Golden, a first grade teacher at Eleva-Strum, said on pajama day that her creative teaching methods help her students feel safe and learn, following her late mother's example—who taught for 30 years. Principal Marty Kempf noted she is a natural educator whose calm approach earns morning hugs from her students as they prepare for summer break.  News8000

  • On Aug 11, local officials launched a stormwater project in La Crosse—experts expect the new system to better redirect water flow and lessen flooding during heavy rains.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents along the southern part of La Crosse will lose water on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as the city replaces a fire hydrant at Mormon Coulee Road & Calvert Road, and after water is restored, discolored water may run from taps for 15 minutes until mineral particles are flushed out.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 11th, the 15th Breakthrough T1D Ride took place in La Crosse to raise funds for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes—bicyclists started at Riverside Park, rode to Iowa and then returned, building a network to support the fight against the disease. Ride coach Mike Crowley said the event was important for those affected by the condition.  WIProud
  • On Aug. 7, health educator Laura Runchey spoke in the WIZM studio about Overdose Awareness Month in La Crosse County and noted that overdose deaths dropped sharply over the past two years after a record high of 55 deaths in 2023. The La Crosse County Health Department plans a treatment resource fair today — a movie event on Aug. 26 and a candlelight vigil on Aug. 27.  WIZM

  • Local high school football teams in the Coulee Region are adapting to reduce concussions as the season begins — coaches at Central and Onalaska report using new tackling techniques and adding Guardian Caps for extra helmet protection. Families and players are being educated on concussion signs and safety measures to better protect athletes during games.  News8000
  • High school teams updated their concussion safety protocols on August 11—coaches are working with medical experts to train athletes ahead of the sports season. Officials expect the new guidelines to reduce injuries and improve player safety.  News8000
