CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old teen from Eau Claire, Du’Marion Stogner, was in court on August 15 facing new charges including substantial battery for beating a downtown man last October while still charged with first-degree homicide in January’s shooting death of André Simmons; a $10,000 cash bond was set and his cases are combined with a status conference scheduled for November—friends and family gathered in Owen Park for a rally against gun violence.  WIProud
  • Don Weber, a 77-year-old prominent local businessman and philanthropist, crashed his vehicle into two parked cars Wednesday night after drinking at local spots and was arrested on DUI and firearm charges after police found a handgun and ammunition in his overturned car—his preliminary breath test measured 0.158 and he is out on bail with a $1,500 bond.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Medical experts advised local parents to update their children's vaccines, including influenza, measles and HPV, before school starts in a few weeks. They said increased contact at school will raise the chance of illnesses spreading—so timely vaccination is key.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • La Crosse City Council approved on Thursday the installation of 18 accessible bubblers next to the old green ones after a 7—6 vote and rejected a motion to delay removing the old fountains. The decision comes as the city, using available funds, works to modernize its drinking fountains—while local members voiced concerns about preserving the town’s historic features.  WIZM
  • Today, La Crosse city council approved a capital projects budget that cuts $900K from planned projects — delaying the brine facility until 2027 and expediting upgrades at Copeland Park.  La Crosse Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The La Crosse Fire Department warned the community about an increased number of suspected overdose calls that occurred from July 21 to August 12 and urged people to call 9-1-1 if someone appeared to be overdosing — they also advised checking on friends who use drugs and obtaining fentanyl test strips and Naloxone.  WEAU
