COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Coulee Region Retired and Senior Volunteer Program celebrated 53 years of community service with an event that honored local volunteers for thousands of service hours—Sister Mary Morrison received recognition for 18,000 hours, Rhonda Olafson was noted for 10,000 hours, and Lifetime President Service Award recipients Mary Green, Maureen Kinney and Neil Miller reached 4,000 hours each. Volunteer Cheryl Gilbertson shared that the program gives participants a strong sense of purpose and connection.  News8000
  • Coulee Region RSVP celebrated its 38th anniversary yesterday with an event that honored its long-term service to local residents. The organization has supported many area residents over the decades—showing its steadfast commitment to the community.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin School Bus Association are partnering for Operation Safe Stop week from Sept. 22 to 26 to remind drivers to stay at least 20 feet away from school buses with flashing red lights—this effort follows more than 1,200 citations for violations and aims to protect student safety.  News8000
  • UWL is launching a new criminology major starting in the spring after receiving Board of Regents approval in September — the program lets students study criminal behavior and its links to problems like poverty, discrimination, trauma, mental illness and substance abuse while preparing them for jobs in law enforcement, courts, health services, counseling and community programs.  News8000
  • Viterbo University held a memorial service at San Damiano Chapel for student Eliotte Heinz, a 22 year old who went missing in July and was later found in water near Brownsville—university officials said they have provided support services to help students cope with the loss.  News8000

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, The Nature Place celebrated the completion of its new solar energy project with a ribbon cutting ceremony for a 120-panel solar array that is expected to cut energy use by 68% and save the nonprofit over $12,000 a year. The savings—reinvested into educational programs, land stewardship, and summer camps—will help further support its mission.  News8000

  • La Crosse city and county officials are set to implement the Pathways Home plan—designed to help address ongoing homelessness challenges and support those who are unhoused in our region.  La Crosse Tribune
  • At the La Crosse County Board meeting on Thursday, board members discussed lowering the fine for possessing 25 grams or less of marijuana to one dollar—supporters said the change would save resources while critics warned it might send the wrong message to kids and noted that offenders would still need to pay court costs.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children's Miracle Network Hospital Heroes saw their creative designs turned into holiday cards when they visited Empire Screen Printing in Onalaska on Thursday morning—proceeds from the sales will support children's healthcare efforts.  News8000
  • The La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative held its first awareness event at The Nature Place in Myrick Park on Thursday evening, marking eight years of local suicide deaths with empty chairs for each lost life. Community groups provided resources + survivors shared personal stories to underline the need for ongoing prevention efforts.  News8000

  • Jeremiah Burish of Explore La Crosse joined WIZM’s La Crosse Talk to discuss upcoming sports events in the region. He explained that La Crescent will host USA Cycling’s gravel nationals (Saturday) while the La Crosse Center will hold a three-year state boys wrestling meet and girls team wrestling will hold its first state championship in 2027.  WIZM
