COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Fox Hollow Golf Course on Sept. 12, 144 golfers joined the sixth annual Rounds for Rescues event — Mid-West Family La Crosse presented a $7,767 check on Sept. 18 to Coulee Region Humane Society to support animal care.  WIZM
  • Great Rivers United Way received a grant and is working with the City of La Crosse to fill 240 diaper bags with diapers, wipes, books and other essentials for families in need. The bags will be distributed by La Crosse County Health and Human Services—helping new and post-partum mothers manage high costs for everyday supplies.  WEAU
  • Applefest weekend began on September 19 — local organizers confirmed the event will run for several days and bring apple-themed celebrations to community members.  News8000
  • The La Crosse Salvation Army and Kwik Trip launched the Coats for Kids drive that asks community members to donate gently used or new coats at 27 Kwik Trip locations—until October to support families in need. Distribution days are set for October 10, 17, and 24 to help children stay warm this winter.  News8000

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hollandberry Pannekoeken will open in the former Wells Fargo building on King Street to offer its Dutch oven-baked pannekoeken to La Crosse diners. Owner Tasos Psomas, who has run the Rochester restaurant since 1986, said he expects to start serving food in November.  News8000
  • Toppers catering launched a new menu on September 19—its updated food options now serve local parties and events. Customers can order the menu for upcoming gatherings in La Crosse.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • AJ Frels of Explore La Crosse explained that the Oktoberfest parade—which drew 150,000 people—boosted local tourism and that talks are underway to renew the UW-L state track meet contract after this season; he added that the NFL draft in Green Bay and expanding festivals also add to the area's vibrant event scene.  WIZM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Job seekers connected with hiring managers from dozens of employers including Ashley Furniture, Kwik Trip, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and City of La Crosse at the 8th Annual Coulee Career Fest held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 18 at the Stoney Creek Hotel in Onalaska — the fair also offered resume help and apprenticeship information to support further job search efforts.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will launch a new criminology major this spring to meet strong student demand. The program will study criminal behavior—looking at links to poverty, discrimination and mental illness.  News8000

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nature Place at Myrick Park installed over 100 solar panels after the city approved the project earlier this year—these panels will save about $12,000 in energy costs annually and a ribbon cutting with live music showed strong community support.  WIZM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tony Evers signed an executive order on Monday asking the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to keep access to routine and COVID-19 vaccines after new federal limits reduced updated vaccine eligibility—local vaccine specialist Bryany Weigel said the order will help clinics provide safe shots.  News8000
  • On Thursday, La Crosse County board members discussed a proposal to lower the marijuana possession fine from $100 to $1, though some said the change was impractical because offenders would still face high court costs. No vote was taken, and the proposal will be debated again next month—David Hundt questioned whether officers would spend time issuing a $1 fine.  WIZM
