COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Oktoberfest Medallion for 2025 was recovered Tuesday morning at Veterans Memorial Pool near UW-La Crosse by four locals—Gavin Gamroth, Kinsey Reynolds-Eilers, Aleyna Rosenow, and Greg Sokup—who will receive $500 cash and a prize medallion from Satori Arts. Clues for its location will be posted daily at 7 a.m. on the Oktoberfest USA website—prompting eager community searches—and will continue until the medallion is found.  WIZM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hannah Amundson previewed Oktoberfest on WIZM’s La Crosse Talk where she explained details of the festival for the People’s Choice awards in the two parades—she also shared one positive and one negative idea for future events.  WIZM
  • Oktoberfest Executive Director Hannah Amundson and La Crosse Police Department officials met on Tuesday to set safety plans for the fest that will begin Thursday on the southside grounds. The event will check guests for prohibited items and offer a free public shuttle—helping ensure safety for roughly 50,000 expected attendees.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Rick Trietley, Viterbo University president since 2022 and retired Army lieutenant colonel, spoke on La Crosse Talk today about how his military background—jumping from planes and serving overseas—prepares him to tackle challenges like declining enrollment, budget issues, and plans for an indoor pool with local partners. He also noted the university’s strong nursing program and the growing role of artificial intelligence in education.  WIZM
  • Viterbo University received a $1 million gift from the family of the late nurse Nancy Haggerty to create a new scholarship for nursing students. The scholarship will provide $50,000 each year to help pay tuition—reducing the need for extra work hours.  WEAU
  • La Crosse’s school board approved a $10 million bid by Fowler and Hammer for an addition at State Road Elementary School that will include eight new classrooms and a gym, with groundbreaking expected next month. The board will hold a budget hearing on Oct 20 to consider a nearly 10% levy increase—a roughly $4 million rise over last year.  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources now urges hunters to test every harvested deer for chronic wasting disease this hunting season. Hunters can drop off samples at kiosks open all day or provide them through licensed meat processors.  News8000

  • Governor Tony Evers visited UW-La Crosse to check progress on the $194 million Prairie Springs Science Center project—this upgrade will replace Cowley Hall with modern labs and classrooms. Construction will begin in spring 2026 and finish by fall 2028.  News8000
  • Mac Kiel was in studio yesterday on La Crosse Talk as he discussed ongoing zoning changes, next week’s committee meetings, and the school district’s 4K program. Today, city officials are holding a budget meeting to address nearly $1.5 million in cuts and the Finance and Personnel committee will consider cycle track upgrades — with matching state funds — and a stoplight addition at a high-crash intersection while Mayor Washington-Spivey will provide more details later this week.  WIZM
  • La Crosse police announced that road closures will be in effect on Sept. 27 for the YMCA Maple Leaf Race and Parade—closures start at 6:30 a.m. and reopen around 2:00 p.m.  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team won its home opener 31—22 over Wayne State on September 23 at Roger Harring Stadium, with quarterback Kyle Haas throwing 344 yards and four touchdowns. The team will play UW—Whitewater in a key road game on October 4 that could impact conference standings.  WIProud
