COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HorseSense will host its biggest fundraiser—the Fall Harvest Festival—this Saturday near Coon Valley. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for kids and $30 per family, and the event will feature meeting the horses, a brat fry, carnival games, face painting and a raffle drawing.  WIZM
  • La Crosse Area Family YMCA received a $75,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust Community Responsive Fund to support youth health and mental health initiatives. It will use the funds — boosting income-based membership, Food Access programs, childcare and a Community Youth Center — to benefit over 8,000 members.  News8000

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Oct. 1, 2025, at about 6:43 a.m., the Shelby Fire Department responded to a structure fire on W4300 County Road M in La Crosse County, finding one mobile home completely destroyed and nearby units with varying damage while residents evacuated and no injuries were reported—investigators are checking the fire’s cause and the American Red Cross is helping displaced neighbors.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Wisconsin officials visited La Crosse, Onalaska, and West Salem schools on Monday to urge students to complete the FAFSA so they can access federal aid and additional support from UW. School counselors and the studentaid.gov website offer guidance with the application process.  News8000
  • UW-Madison Professor Emeritus Dr. Steve Ackerman will speak at 10 a.m. Monday at the Main Street Library in La Crosse to preview his talk on the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking and its link to modern weather forecasting challenges. He warns that federal funding cuts may risk next-generation weather satellites—essential tools for accurate predictions.  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • La Crosse will open six leaf drop-off sites on October 24 with Myrick Park removed from service, so residents must remove all bags and containers when leaving leaves at sites marked with orange snow fencing. City-wide leaf collection runs October 27 through November 21.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Oct 2, WisDOT held a meeting at The Nature Place in La Crosse to discuss planned upgrades along Highway 16—officials gathered local feedback to guide future improvements.  News8000
  • At a Finance and Planning Committee meeting on Thursday, a resolution to restructure City Hall by Mayor Washington-Spivey failed to pass by a 4—2 vote. The proposal would have created a director of operations role while cutting a communications coordinator job, and the Council will decide on October 9 after more public input.  News8000
  • Local leaders and cyclists pedaled through La Crosse streets Thursday morning in a ride under the Week Without Driving initiative that highlighted transportation challenges for those who rely on bikes. The event brought together city officials and federal representatives — who joined to test bike-friendly routes — as they call for improvements to the biking infrastructure.  News8000
  • Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey visited State Road Elementary School this week to teach second graders about local government and civics—prompting the students to ask questions about his role and the election process. He aims to inspire early community involvement and spark an interest in local government.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gundersen announced that during September—the 20th annual Steppin’ Out in Pink walk in La Crosse raised a record $510K for breast cancer programs with 4,400 participants, and the funds will help pay for new cancer treatments and support services. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers broke ground Thursday on an $8 million housing project that will turn the old Grand View Hospital into 52 rental units while keeping its historic look. The project will offer studios+one to three-bedroom apartments and is set to finish by spring.  News8000
