- ➤ A University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student from La Crosse is raising funds for the Coulee Region Humane Society by organizing a virtual pet costume contest that charges a $5 entry fee and runs through October 26th—three pets have joined so far and local businesses have donated over $500 in prizes. - ➤ Sparta's House of Shadows opened its doors Friday for another season of frights as it partnered with Chaotic Charities Haunted House and the Boys and Girls Club to benefit Sparta kids and families—tickets helped support local programs while the event runs every Friday and Saturday in October. - ➤ Archivist Scott Brouwer from the La Crosse Public Library appeared on the WIZM studio on Oct.2 to talk about his award-winning series Dark La Crosse Stories and its upcoming Governor’s Award Archival Innovation presentation set for Monday at the Capella Performing Arts Center. He also previewed a new YouTube installment called Still Trouble — which will look at moonshine and bootlegging during Prohibition— that will add fresh context to the city’s past. WIZM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ La Crosse City Council met with residents on Oct 3 to discuss adding a new City Administrator—using a survey to gather public input—and to explain how the role would ease the Mayor’s state and federal duties. The council will vote in February on the proposal, which is expected to cost about $190,000 from the operating budget. WIProud
- ➤ A study brought little new support for the operations director position and a city committee voted 4-2 against the hire—council members argued that the plan was not well thought out while the full council will vote on the proposal next Thursday. WIZM
- ➤ County administrator Jane Klekamp has prepared a 2026 budget that outlines nearly $209 million in spending to reduce debt, complete 11 miles of roads, chip seal 19 miles, add a sheriff’s deputy in Shelby, and support over 1,000 family-wage jobs—funds that will also help improve safe roads, childcare, and jail reforms. The county will continue public budget discussions this fall with a vote scheduled on November 10. WEAU
- ➤ La Crosse County is recommending cutting the SMRT bus program from its 2026 budget due to rising costs and low ridership—SMRT operates 13 routes with about 33 riders per day and its cost is expected to jump from $120,000 in 2025 to $157,000 next year. - ➤ Eau Claire County reported its first human case of West Nile Virus this year on October 3—health officials noted similar cases in Barron, St. Croix and La Crosse Counties. Experts advise residents to remove stagnant water from yards—steps to lessen mosquito breeding. WIProud
- ➤ The newly opened Raising Cane's in La Crosse is selling pink plush dog toys this October to help fund Stand Up To Cancer. The toys cost $9.99 plus tax and are available at the restaurant near Valley View Mall and online. News8000

- ➤ Developers broke ground today on the $8 million project to turn the 100-year-old Grandview hospital on Main Street into a 52-unit apartment complex. Developer Ari Kolas said the property will feature modern amenities — a community room, exercise equipment, and an outdoor patio — and tenants may move in as early as April. WIZM
