COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Harter’s Quick Clean Up is hosting a free document shredding event on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 at its facility at 2850 Larson Street from 8 a.m. to noon and the first 100 pounds of documents are free to shred + fees apply for extra weight.  WIZM
  • A local nonprofit repairs and gifts donated vehicles to low-income families to help them gain reliable transportation—supporting their social, economic, and medical stability. Chariot4Hope accepts vehicle donations year-round to offer a path to self-sufficiency.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • La Crosse School District Superintendent Dr. Aaron Engel said the district is working to keep and grow its student body with more financial aid and school updates as enrollment drops due to falling birthrates—State Road Elementary will get nine new classrooms and a new gym while the Hogan Administration site will be torn down with a farewell tour on Oct 15 from 6-7 p.m. He also noted his role as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard.  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cottonwood Trail in Myrick Park will close Monday for two to three weeks for an environmental restoration project that removes clay pigeon fragments and upgrades the trail and parking lot to meet ADA standards and reduce erosion—officials say the Nature Place and park shelters remain open and the trail will reopen in late October.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • La Crosse city officials propose a 70% cut to the Arts Board's funding which may limit art projects as they work to qualify for state tax credits in 2027 — the board awaits further review.  La Crosse Tribune
  • La Crosse city officials announced that the 2026 budget will cut staff and services in departments such as Parks, Library and Planning — changes that will reduce city operations when the cuts take effect.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Travelers can still enroll in TSA PreCheck at La Crosse Regional Airport from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday—TSA officers continue to work and air traffic is managed by a contractor—keeping airport operations stable during the government shutdown.  News8000
  • DOTs said the Black Hawk Bridge will close for good on October 20 at 7 a.m., and a free car ferry will run starting early November until the new bridge opens in spring. Crews will soon remove the bridge deck and plan to start demolition by mid-December—Joanne White said the ferry service will help her keep going to church and shops.  WIZM
  • La Crosse County saved nearly $5 million over 15 years by cutting energy and paper use through sustainability programs that lowered electric bills by $370,000 since 2008—helped by solar panel installations—and reduced gasoline and diesel fuel use over the past decade.  WIZM
  • The Wisconsin Department of Justice asked a judge to pause a ruling that would require checking the citizenship of all 3.6 million registered voters before the February primary. Attorney General Kaul said new verification changes will take months—possibly affecting about 200 online voter registrations each day.  News8000
  • On Monday, La Crosse held two public meetings on the plan to hire a city administrator as part of four sessions last week that drew about 20 people. The study group will pass public comments to the council before a vote in February, and online meetings are set for noon and 6 p.m. today—more sessions will be held on Oct. 14.  WIZM

  • Dr. Alexis Eastman from the University of Wisconsin will lead a discussion on brain health and methods to lower dementia risk at the Badger Talk series at UW-La Crosse today from 6-8 p.m.—residents are invited to attend and ask questions about early diagnosis and research funding challenges.  WIZM

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UWL Eagles came back from a 17-point deficit to beat ninth-ranked UW Whitewater 23—20 in double overtime on Saturday at Perkins Stadium, with key plays that turned the game around. Quarterback Kyle Haas led the team as Gabe Lynch reached 2,000 rushing yards—marking a big milestone, and the Eagles will face UW Eau Claire at home this Saturday.  WIProud
