COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officers rescued a moose from a canal on Oct 8 and safely moved it to a secure area—officials are now monitoring its condition.  News8000
  • The Hunger Task Force of La Crosse launched its annual virtual food drive Monday with a $5,000 matching gift that will double every donation to help local families facing higher grocery costs and cuts to SNAP benefits. The campaign runs through Oct. 31 and invites community members to donate food or cash online.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • Clara Gelatt and Katie Bittner visited the WIZM studio to preview the five-day La Crosse Adventure Film Festival that began October 8th. Events took place at the Pump House, Mt. La Crosse and the Rivoli—showing films, storytelling under the stars and community support activities.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Road Elementary project is underway as officials plan to upgrade school facilities—work will continue over the coming months.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of La Crosse will begin hydrant flushing on October 13 as part of routine water system maintenance. Crews will work in the northern end (including the Airport Industrial Park, Moorings Drive and Upper North Side east of George Street) before moving to southern areas on October 15, and residents may notice lower water pressure or temporary discoloration during the work.  News8000
  • Governor Evers signed a $9,506,767 contract to improve WIS35 between the La Crosse/Vernon County line and Sunnyside Drive in La Crosse; Gerke Excavating will start work on October 13th. The project—which includes reconstruction of the County GI intersection, culvert replacement, and repair of the Momon Creek bridge deck—will finish by November 2026.  WEAU
  • La Crosse city council president Tamra Dickinson spoke on Oct. 7 about a $3 million shortfall in the 2026 budget and plans to fill a new operations director role—explaining that the position differs from a city administrator—during her La Crosse Talk interview. She also discussed police reports on bars serving underage people and upcoming groundbreakings at Haven on Main, the Grandview building, and State Road Elementary.  WIZM
  • Governor approved a $9.5M project that will renovate pavement and intersections on Highway 35 between La Crosse and Vernon County — construction will begin Oct. 13th and finish in November 2026.  La Crosse Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Steppin' Out in Pink, a local nonprofit that supports breast cancer patients, received a $5,000 grant from the ALTA Good Deeds Foundation to expand research and patient care programs in La Crosse—according to a release on Wednesday.  News8000

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers from Three Sixty Real Estate requested city Tax Increment Financing to cover an $8 million shortfall for the $64 million Copper Rocks apartment complex planned on the long-vacant KMart site in La Crosse. City officials said the rebates will come directly from future tax revenue—negotiations are expected to conclude by early next year so demolition and construction can begin.  News8000
