COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erin Waldhart, executive director of WAFER Food Pantry, said that hunger is rising and donations are down as the pantry struggles with a government shutdown and SNAP benefits ending on Nov. 1. She urged local donors to drop off soup, peanut butter, breakfast foods, and mac & cheese while groups work to boost support — a challenge tougher than the pandemic.  WIZM
  • A list shows trick or treat times across local areas with Black River Falls from 5—7 p.m., Holmen from 4—8 p.m., La Crescent businesses from 3—5 p.m., Melrose from 5—7 p.m., La Crosse from 4—8 p.m., Sparta businesses from 3:30—5:30 p.m., Tomah from 4—7 p.m. and West Salem areas from 3—5 p.m.—La Crosse Police advise families to use these times while taking safety precautions during Halloween.  WIZM

  • Johns, Flaherty — Collins will host its 21st annual employment law seminar at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Lunda Center at Western Technical College, where local employers will learn about protecting confidential information, writing employee handbooks and wage and hour law amid changing workplace rules.  News8000

CULTURE NEWS

  • High school musicians from 14 schools joined the UW-La Crosse Screaming Eagles Marching Band for its annual High School Band Day, performing at halftime during Saturday’s football game at Roger Harring Stadium—students came from schools ranging from Wauwatosa to Aquinas.  WIZM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Barge traffic resumed along the Mississippi River near La Crosse yesterday after a mechanical failure closed a key railroad bridge for nearly 48 hours and halted river shipments during harvest season. Boat crews reported frustration over the delay+ officials said they are investigating the cause of the failure.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Prairie Springs Science Center at UW-La Crosse received state approval to move forward after the State Building Commission approved plans, demolition of Cowley Hall, and construction costs (a key step for the project). State Senator Brad Pfaff said the new center (designed to keep the university competitive and draw science and healthcare talent) will support UW-La Crosse’s mission.  News8000

  • A La Crosse nonprofit held its 15th annual Inspiring Sustainability Awards Tuesday night at La Crosse Distilling Co. and recognized one individual and one organization for their work to promote a green future. The event celebrated local efforts to improve sustainability and shift the focus from climate change gloom.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Couleecap Inc. received $751,926 from HUD for its Permanent Supportive Housing program—this funding will support individuals facing chronic homelessness in western Wisconsin.  La Crosse Tribune
  • The La Crosse Public Library Board will hold a community listening session on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Main Street library's Lower-Level Auditorium to ask residents for input on budget cuts; the board will present options to reduce hours and positions at both branches or close the North Branch while expanding Main Library hours—residents who cannot attend may submit written comments until Nov. 4 at 3 p.m.  News8000
