- ➤ Interact students from schools in La Crosse, La Crescent, Onalaska, and Holmen will visit neighborhoods on Friday, October 31 to collect canned and non-perishable items for food pantries instead of candy during trick-or-treat hours; those unable to donate on that day are asked to drop items off at the Hunger Task Force on Saturday, November 1 at 10 a.m. (the virtual food drive will also end on October 31.) - ➤ Fraternal twins Stella Strinmoen Egland and Floyd Strinmoen turned 100 yesterday — marking a century of life in our area. News8000
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Dillon McArdle—director of Viterbo Fine Arts Center—said the venue will host Roy Wood Jr. on Saturday and Ben Folds a week later as part of upcoming shows. He has booked top acts such as Broadway star Bernadette Peters and comedian Lewis Black while also keeping traditional events like the Nutcracker scheduled. WIZM
- ➤ The Heart of La Crosse comedy troupe will perform This Ain't No Holiday Show at the Pump House Regional Arts Center over two weekends in November — shows are set for 7:30 p.m. on November 6th through 8th and November 13th through 15th. Tickets will cost $30 for the general public, $25 for members, and $15 for students and military members. News8000
- ➤ La Crosse hosted the Heart of La Crosse comedy show on Oct 29, where local performers filled the stage with humor—highlighting the city's creative spirit. The event celebrated community talent and added to La Crosse's lively cultural scene. News8000
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, the State Building Commission approved Phase II of the Prairie Springs Science Center at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse which will add 13 new labs and research areas in a $195 million project — it will require demolishing outdated Cowley Hall built in the 1960s. The new center will be finished in late 2028 and open for classes in early 2029 — giving local students more space to learn. WIZM

- ➤ La Crosse Library Director Dawn Wacek discussed the city's $2 million budget shortfall and possible cuts — including closing the north branch library and reducing staff, services and hours — on a recent La Crosse Talk interview. The Library Board will decide on the cuts Nov. 11 after holding a listening session at 4 p.m. Nov. 4. WIZM
- ➤ Around 10,000 La Crosse County residents may face delays in receiving FoodShare benefits as the government shutdown continues—officials have not yet resolved the processing issues behind the delay. News8000

- ➤ Three Holmen students (Mason Thorson, Ryan Stelter, and Rowdy Herrmann) will travel nearly 5,500 miles to compete in the UWW World MMA Championships in Greece on November 5 and 6. They have trained for years at Iron Works Training Center (in Holmen) to represent their community and aim for international gold. News8000
