COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit Couleecap in La Crosse received over $750,000 in federal HUD funds to expand its Permanent Selective Housing program that offers wrap-around care — such as rental assistance and staffing support — to help chronically homeless individuals gain stable housing.  WEAU
  • Marine Credit Union Foundation donated $10,000 to Eau Claire’s Feed My People Food Bank this holiday season (each dollar delivers two meals) and will also support Hunger Task Force in La Crosse and Feeding America in Milwaukee. Credit Union CEO Tom Knothe said the donation comes as part of a year-end food drive to help ensure families have nutritious meals (the effort stretches community impact).  WEAU
  • Officials with the Salvation Army in La Crosse have considered indoor renovations at the 8th Street shelter to add space for 18 more people by relocating the upstairs chapel. Congressman Derrick Van Orden visited the shelter recently, but officials said new construction is unlikely—city zoning limits further expansion.  WIZM

CULTURE NEWS

  • UW-La Crosse students will perform the musical tick, tick … BOOM! today at Frederick Theatre in Morris Hall with a 7:30 p.m. opening, and shows are scheduled through next week. UW-L assistant professor Dr. Nic Barilar said the show uses a unique three-sided stage – a feature not seen in the theatre before.  WIZM
  • UWL held its New Music Festival on November 6 — the event featured live music at the campus as local audiences enjoyed the performances.  News8000

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The FAA announced flight cuts due to a government shutdown and low staffing, causing delays and cancellations for travelers heading to the Coulee Region and other busy areas. Local travel agencies and Chippewa Valley Regional Airport advised checking with airlines for updates as Sun Country Airlines will adjust schedules starting today — officials are monitoring the situation closely.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District officials revealed new renderings for a planned elementary school today—showing a design with spacious classrooms and a playground to meet growing student needs. The plans will guide future construction and help improve education for local students.  News8000
  • On Nov. 4, school board president Deb Suchla spoke on La Crosse Talk about plans to fix a $2M budget gap by closing three schools and building a new elementary school — and she discussed a new rule limiting cellphones and students skipping class. She also explained food shortages after SNAP cuts and said the board honored local businesses for their support — moves that will shape district plans.  WIZM

  • State Sen. Pfaff hosted a roundtable at Black River Beach center on Wednesday where residents discussed keeping health care costs low. Analysts forecast that over 200,000 people may lose coverage under Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act in the next decade — panelists warned that rising costs could force families to drop their insurance and reduce available insurers.  WIZM
  • Burns and Cameron parks remain fenced off in downtown La Crosse as the city works on a plan to address safety issues such as drug use and violence after the parks closed on September 4—City officials said the plan will guide when the parks reopen and might serve as a model for addressing safety issues in other areas.  WIZM

  • La Crosse County's Hillview Health Care Campus is nearing completion on a $20 million renovation that will upgrade critical health services for residents — the project is set to finish soon.  La Crosse Tribune
