  • Great Rivers United Way announced that 23 local nonprofits will receive $350,000 in Basic Needs Grants to support food, shelter and safety programs across the Coulee Region—26 programs, including four first-time recipients, will help organizations such as Couleecap, WAFER Food Pantry and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse aid people in need.  WEAU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire caused by overheated wiring was quickly extinguished Tuesday evening at a home on the 100 block of 17th Place South. Firefighters arrived just after 7 p.m. and left only minimal damage while urging residents to check wiring, avoid overloading circuits, and unplug unused appliances.  WIZM

  • Cyber scams are growing more advanced, and local small businesses are becoming major targets as they expand online—UWL’s Small Business Development Center now offers free consulting to help owners secure their data, with tax professionals facing high risks from breaches.   • Sparta High School brought community professionals into classrooms to guide students preparing for college or work; experts like Cole Bawek from Ashley Furniture shared real-world skills and challenges — students chose from five experts for tailored advice.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last month, the Drug Take Back event at the Health and Human Services building in La Crosse collected over 53,000 pounds of unused medications, and state and federal figures showed Wisconsin led the nation. Since 2010, the state has gathered more than 1.42 million pounds—only California and Texas have recorded higher totals.  WIZM
  • La Crosse’s Yard Waste and Brush site on Isle La Plume will close Tuesday, November 25 at 6 p.m.; residents must take their brush and yard waste to the county landfill while leaf drop-off sites remain available.   • The La Crosse Library board voted Tuesday to close the North Branch in June—saving $180,000 to boost hours and services at the Main Street branch. Many north side residents worry the closure will cut their only internet access while board members stressed that outreach programs would continue.  WIZM
  • The government shutdown disrupted flights at the La Crosse Regional Airport this week as American Airlines canceled flights on Monday and Tuesday morning—flight 3634 from Chicago was canceled while flights for Wednesday remained scheduled as of Tuesday.  WIZM
  • Andrew Ericson hosted a La Crosse Talk show on Nov. 12 to explain issues with downtown bike lanes and the plan to update the 2nd Street cycle track with DOT grant money. The city council will recommend one of four DOT plans for downtown bike lanes today—an effort that could keep major changes off the streets for 50 years.  WIZM

  • Two-time MLB Manager of the Year Pat Murphy—who led the Brewers to 90+ win seasons—will speak at a special event hosted by the La Crosse Loggers at the La Crosse Center on January 17. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon at the center box office or via Ticketmaster.  WIZM
