COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Operation Santa letters are now open for local residents to send in their holiday wishes — the program invites families to submit their notes following the November 19 announcement.  News8000
  • English Lutheran Church on King Street in La Crosse is preparing a holiday exhibit called 'The Bethlehem Event' for December 13th and 14th—featuring live animals, actors, and detailed scenery that recreates Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. Coordinated by Pam Strittmater and involving nearly 200 volunteers across five generations, visitors must register on the church website to attend.  WIZM
  • Onalaska earned the HEARTSafe Community designation from the Citizen CPR Foundation on Wednesday after finishing all 13 required steps—joining La Crosse and La Crescent in showing their commitment to fast, lifesaving CPR practices.  News8000
  • A giant Christmas tree was lit on November 19 in downtown La Crosse — drawing a crowd and kicking off the holiday season festivities.  News8000

BUSINESS NEWS

  • North side business owners are moving forward after the city closed the pool and library branch due to budget constraints, leaving many residents feeling unheard. They plan to work together for better city engagement—hoping to spark new local activity and preserve neighborhood vitality.  WIZM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Allegiant Air will begin service at La Crosse Regional Airport on February 6, 2026 with flights to Phoenix on Mondays and Fridays and will add Orlando flights on Sundays and Thursdays starting May 21, 2026. City and county officials each contributed $250,000 to help secure the airline—tickets are already available through its website.  WIZM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • GROW hosted its 8th Kids Cooking Challenge in La Crosse where 44 individuals and teams cooked recipes using mystery ingredients given on November 13 with submissions due by November 16. Western Technical College Early Childhood Students judged the dishes — winners included Chef Reba (Advanced Teen), Chef Lucy (Advanced 12 and under), Kira’s Kitchen, Daniella’s Food Haven, and teams from West Salem and Skogen Boys and Girls Club Chefs.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bliss Road will be closed for two days next week for water utility work—drivers should plan to use alternate routes between 29th and Grandad Bluff Road from Tuesday at 7 a.m. until Wednesday at 5 p.m.  News8000

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hillview Health Care Center’s renovation project is in its final phase as the nursing home’s 600 hallway—currently under full construction—is expected to partially reopen by the end of December while assisted living and supportive housing units are added. The La Crosse County Aging and Disability Resource Center will start its licensing process for the intergenerational center with public service beginning mid to late February, and the project will be fully complete by March.  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • On November 19, UW–La Crosse cross country coach Derek Stanley joined WIZM’s La Crosse Talk to preview his men’s defending champion team and his women’s team, which will compete at the National Championships on Saturday at the Roger Milliken Cross Country Course in Spartanburg—he also highlighted recent races run in harsh weather and ongoing plans to enhance local course facilities.  WIZM
  • UW-La Crosse will honor former wrestling coach Greg Lonning on Saturday at Mitchell Hall when the women’s basketball and wrestling teams face Luther College at 5 p.m. The event will celebrate Lonning’s impact on the university’s wrestling program—his legacy helped shape a strong team culture.  News8000
  • La Crosse Loggers announced that Dominic Sciturro becomes the new head coach — replacing Josh Frye who left for Biola University. Sciturro, who served as both third base and hitting coach, helped the team set four offensive records last season — including runs scored and stolen bases.  WIZM
