COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The free ferry resumed service Monday morning after a pause to allow for the implosion of the old Lansing Bridge into the Mississippi — crews spent the weekend clearing a channel and continued removing debris on Monday. The ferry now carries vehicles and passengers between Iowa and Wisconsin.  WIZM
  • Hillview Life Center is asking local residents for support after a call for help was issued on Dec. 22 to sustain its services. Community members are encouraged to contact the center for more details.  News8000
  • A local resident donated over 170 bikes on Dec.22 to community members as a holiday gesture. The generous giveaway spread cheer by providing bikes to those in town.  News8000
  • Centro Latino is teaming up with the Salvation Army to collect donations outside Walmart on the South side later today from 4 to 6 p.m.—the effort supports local Latino residents and others in need.  News8000
  • Hillview Life Center is asking locals to donate items including gardening tools, adaptive cooking equipment and art supplies and volunteer time as it prepares to open its new intergenerational facility for older adults and young children. Renovations nearly complete will allow the center - its first facility of this kind - to open early next year.  News8000
  • A memorial to honor unsheltered individuals took place on Dec. 22 in La Crosse, where community members gathered to reflect on past hardships and discuss local support efforts. Organizers emphasize the need for ongoing community care.  News8000

  • The Ice Castle opened to the public on Monday, Dec. 22. Visitors can enjoy the unique winter display at this new local attraction.  News8000

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Onalaska School District families received over 120 food baskets on Saturday ahead of Christmas (donated by staff and community partners) to help with winter break.  WEAU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that a hunter-harvested adult buck from near the Monroe + Vernon County borders tested positive for chronic wasting disease in La Crosse. The existing baiting and feeding ban will be extended for three extra years to prevent further spread.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The La Crosse County jail chaplain, Ann Wales, will retire on New Year’s Eve after five years in the role — Jason Kalember will succeed her in January to continue support for inmates.  WIZM
  • Attorney General Josh Kaul announced Monday that Wisconsin will receive over $630,000 from a 48-state settlement with Mercedes-Benz over illegal emissions devices in diesel vehicles sold from 2008 to 2016. Car owners with unrepaired vehicles may be entitled to extra relief.  News8000

  • Local health officials report that flu season is ramping up as more cases were recorded on Dec. 22; clinics recommend residents get their flu shots and follow simple precautions (flu shot supply may vary).  News8000
