  • Students from La Crosse’s Health Science Academy spent Tuesday morning at the former fire station on Monitor Street building custom cat scratching posts for Coulee Region Humane Society—this work is the second phase of the Mugs for Rugs program that collected more than 100 rugs from seniors and aims to build 40 posts.  WIZM

  • Cardinal Raymond Burke—a native of Richland Center and former La Crosse bishop who founded the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe—is noted as a potential but unlikely candidate for pope after Pope Francis’ death due to his conservative stances and clashes with the current papacy. He still leads Masses at the shrine and remains a well-known figure among traditional Catholics in our community.  News8000

  • Local first responders, emergency vehicles and the Mayo helicopter were onsite behind Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School yesterday at 12:30 p.m. to lead a mock car crash demonstration—designed to prepare students for prom season.  News8000
  • On Tuesday afternoon, April 22, the Milwaukee Brewers stopped at Southern Bluffs Elementary to honor first-grade teacher Jennifer Friedman during their Famous Racing Sausages tour. She received a Grand Slam Teacher award and a custom jersey from team president Rick Schlesinger, and the team also gave a $1,000 check to Principal Amanda Durnen—adding extra excitement for the students.  WIZM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin's 2024 Trillion Trees Pledge Annual Report showed nearly 10.7 million trees were planted and over 57,000 acres of forestland were conserved as part of its commitment signed on Earth Day 2021. Governor Evers said the state is working toward a goal of planting 100 million trees by 2030—demonstrating steady progress against its pledge.  News8000

  • US House Rep Mark Pocan led a two-hour town hall at La Crosse's Cappella Performing Arts Center on April 22, where around 300 locals asked questions on health care, taxes and government programs.
