COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ADRC hosted a community picnic for National Senior Citizens Day in La Crosse County on Thursday afternoon—seniors enjoyed a day filled with local celebration.  News8000
  • La Crosse-based crisis call center —Great Rivers 211— is assisting Milwaukee flood victims by answering calls and connecting them with needed recovery resources. The network usually serves the Coulee Region and will extend its support to residents statewide.  News8000

  • A La Crosse murder trial is delayed after a new competency exam was ordered for homicide defendant John P. Stumlin—questions about his mental fitness have been raised again.  La Crosse Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College students started their academic year today as nearly 300 freshmen moved into dorms at Viterbo and new students at Winona State joined orientation events—officials warn that heavy move-in traffic may slow travel on Huff, Mark, Main and Sarnia streets.  News8000
  • Dr. Aaron Engel, superintendent for the La Crosse School District, joined News 8 Now live on studio on August 21st to discuss the first day of school with new start times of 7:45 a.m. for elementary and 8:25 a.m. for middle and high schools — he added that a $53 million referendum will fund future projects including an addition at State Road Elementary in October, removal of the Hogan Administrative Building in November, and groundbreaking on a new elementary school next spring.  News8000
  • Heavy traffic and road closures are expected near UW-La Crosse as more than 3,000 students move into campus from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 — residents should plan ahead for delays.  La Crosse Tribune
  • Heavy traffic is expected in La Crosse as 3000 UWL students begin moving in from Wednesday, August 27 through September 1—several streets near the campus will close with about 250 volunteers helping direct vehicles, and fall classes start on September 2.  News8000

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USPS upgraded the La Crosse Post Office as part of its 10-year, $40 billion plan to improve operations and save on transportation costs. The new package sorting machine now processes up to 5000 packages an hour — new delivery vehicles add safety features without cutting jobs.  WIProud

SPORTS NEWS

  • In La Crosse, the Bass Master Elite Series is underway as 101 professional anglers fish on the Mississippi River for crucial qualification points. Anglers fished Thursday and Friday and the field will narrow—50 on Saturday and 10 on Sunday for the championship round.  News8000
